keyboard doesnt work in boot-up

i need to reformat my hd but my usb keyboard isnt being recognized in boot-up (keyboard light doesnt turn on either) to access bios or to boot from cd. i dont have any money to buy a ps/2 keyboard but i have tried a usb to ps/2 converter and that didnt work either. ive searched other posts and such to no avail but i read that i need to turn on legacy usb support - which is in the bios but i cant get into bios! thanks for any help -

There might be something wrong with your keyboard. The usb/ps2 converter should have worked, that's what I have used before.

Is the keyboard connected directly to the computer or is it connected to a kvm switch?

If you don't have another keyboard to try, you can always remove the battery from the motherboard or reset the jumper, this will reset the bios to default.

1. Sometimes the bios only recognises the keyboard on certain ports; have you tried moving it around?
2. Do you have a +5vUSB (or something like that) jumper on the mainboard? If you do, try enabling it. This will power the keyboard even when the system is off; so you will know if the keyboard itself has burned out.
3. Not all keyboards work with the PS2 adapters...this is nothing out of the ordinary unless it was working on such a converter before.
4. You can get PS2 keyboards without buying them...these are probably the most common 'dumpster-diving' finds. You might also be able to get them from mid-sized companys...the IT people usualy have a pile of them that they don't want, yet they don't want to throw away.
