Hi,
Has anyone got the Q9550 CPU and overclocked it, while still using the standard air fans, because mine is default at 2.83GHz and I'd like to push it abit :)
Thanks
Matt

I have a Q6600 OC'd to 3.7GHz which is a pretty similar chip. I wouldn't recommend overclocking without an aftermarket cooler. Is your PC from a mass manufacturer or did you build it yourself? What are your specs?

Well it sounds like you can overclock it then. What kind of motherboard do you have? That will be the most important factor. You can't OC without a decent motherboard.
Realistically though, if you have a decent motherboard you should be able to hit 3.6GHz easily with it and go much higher than that with some tweaking.

Okay not my personal favorite board but that will certainly overclock a Q9550.
Looks like you have everything you need to start overclocking. I strongly suggest you get a new cooler before doing so though.
If you need pointers on your OC, I'd take it to the overclocking thread. If you want a good cooler, give me a price range and I'll help you pick one. A decent cooler isn't too terribly expensive :)

The 750i is not a very good chipset to try and overclock a quad with. If you really want performance (or even long term reliability at stock) you ought to ditch the board for something else.
There's little in common with the Q6600 and Q9550 really as far as overclocking approach goes. The Q6600 is literally a case of a CPU speed wall at a certain voltage. The Q9550 is much more FSB dependant and requires fine tuning to other adjustments cheap boards don't have in order to get the best out of it, and as such is far more reliant on having a decent motherboard.
