laptop has an error message up when booting.stop.unable to locate component.failed to start because kernel.32.dll.was not found.reinstalling application may fix this problem.im on xp.and recently installed internet explorer 8.is this a hd issue?if it is will i be able to recall my data.important photos,music,and files.im lost on this .would i be better off leaving laptop into a shop for the experts?or could i sort this myself??thanks :(

Oops... sounds like a bad problem... try to see if you can do the following:
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
? Restart your computer
? After pressing the power button, repeatedly tap the F8 key.
? Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
? Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
? Choose the administrator's account.

Just wanted to post my opinion...
Since kernel32.dll is an essential system file, you may have to reinstall your opearting system. Reinstalling XP is not a destructive task; no files or programs will be lost in the process if you install the same version of XP over the old one. However, all that it is is troublesome and time-consuming.

im using service pack 3 of xp on laptop.but can only get my hands on normal xp cd.will this matter???thanks

Hmm... it might work. I have no sure answer for you, but can only guess at it; I'm assuming that by a normal xp cd, you mean sp2; this is the typical, if not normal, version of xp cds. It could work, as sp2 and sp3 do not have great system differences, and the programs might still function properly. Even if programs don't work normally on it at first, updating xp to sp3 should do the trick. Note: This is only a guess!!
A definite safe way would be to obtain an sp3 cd. Since you probably should have the cd key of XP, you wouldn't need to purchase an entirely new xp installation cd; check to see if they offer xp sp3 cds without the serial key. That would be much cheaper.

@d4rkn1ght, in other threads jboyle was running slow and was advised to increase his memory. As far as I can tell this was done. He attempted to defrag the HDD and it failed due to the fact that the drive was too full. This defrag failure may be the cause of loosing the kernel32.dll.
It is possible to slipstream the XP cd with SP3 and perform a non-destructive repair. There are several ways to do this one of which is outlined in this article:

After doing this the HDD would still be full and still cause problems.
This would be a walk in the park for you or I, d4arkn1ght but for someone with little experience it could be disastrous?

My first recommendation before reformatting or attempting a repair on XP is; if you have a lot of stuff in My Documents like pictures, etc. that you wish to rescue, you will need a second drive e.g. an external USB drive to transfer it to. Then you can use the following method to rescue your data files using a working computer to download and burn a recovery disk:
Download a Linux Live Disk.iso it?s 695MB and will take a little time to download?.

After you have your data on another drive you will be able to either get a larger drive, install XP and copy your data back or reformat and reinstall XP on your old drive then copy back just some of your data and leave enough room for defragging or just redirect you?re My Documents to the USB drive and use them from there.

thanks to you both for the advice.got a caddy and a loan of a hardrive and slaved the data from mine to that.then reinstalled xp back onto my machine then copied the data back on from slave.i would never have known how to do this with out ur help.also bought a 1tb ex hd and backed up my files onto it.cleared up my laptop hd and defragged it aswell.my laptop is running sweet as a nut :) thanks to you guys your lifesavers .lol jb

just one other question if you dont mind 2old?i recently installed 2g of ram and its only reading as 1g ?? why would this be??could it be the wrong ram for my machine??

Could be many things?. Bad stick, Bad connection, Bad socket. Check your connection and make sure the sticks are set down good. Swap the sticks and check again.. Just install one stick and if it shows 1GB then swap it to the other socket and see if it works there.. Do the same with the other stick?.
