Hi, i need some advice, i have a bluray mkv file which i converted from bluray dvd. but when i play a bluray movie from the disc itself or from a mkv file, i always seem to get these gray dottish dots in playback have a look at the picture. they only seem to appear in dark scene well they become more clearer to see i think, i still see them in light scenes, does anyone know what it is and how to get rid of it.

Also whats the best software to playback mkv bluray files, i currently use vlc.

Well it could simply be film grain, which usually occurs more in dark (under lit) scenes. For older folks movies always had grain in darker scenes. Many older films being transferred to Blu-Ray are being processed to try to eliminate it to more suit today's customers who seem to prefer a shot on video look. A prime example is the movie Patton which looks nothing like the original I saw in the theaters. The removal of grain is not without some inherent problems as certain artifacts and loss of details can occur.

You could try Xvid4PSP to make your MKV. It has many options available that may mitigate the effect if you prefer. Look under Denoise/Sharpen.

Do some of the newer HD MKV conversions of recent movies floating around also exhibit this in VLC?

When you say ps3 what are you viewing them on?

These are VLC png snaps from mp4 rips. But again some filtering may have been used.

I'm a little confused. What Blu-Ray drive are you using in your computer? I didn't think that VLC could play Blu-Ray?

Well VLC, MPC and I also have JetAudio Media Player (which I like more and more) all play my MKVs fine. VLC uses less cpu.

The only common denominator I see is your monitor. I would review all my settings. Can you take your ps3 to friends house and see how it looks a larger flatscreen?

Here's an Xvid conversion (AVI now) of the 2nd 1080p MKV sample. Same resolution but half the file size. Tried to get the same scene.

Still looks good at half the files size. The MKVs bitrate is 8511 Kbps the Xvid's is 4675 Kbps.

none of my friends have a hdtv, so cannot test it out that way. here a picture of iran man 1080p

it looks better than a 720p, anumated films i watch in hd seem amazing quality, maybe it is just the movie and i need a bigger screen to get the full potential, what size screen do you have?
