Oi Oi Oi
Im gonna help you out homie. Monster hunter is a HARDCORE game for HARDCORE gamers. This is the type of game that many love and enjoy AND YOU CAN TO!!!!! >_<
Dont give up on it just yet.
IDK which MH title your specifically playing but atm it dont matter. First thing's first. Your new to monster hunter so he only weapons you need to deal with off the bat are great sword and sword and shield class weapons. Its preferable for beginners to stick with sword and shield class tho, because of the speed AND defense. You can attack then run for you life!!!! >_<
OK, now theres a quest you want to do right?
Find the AREA that the quest is in and then do a GATHERING quest that in the same area. Gathering quests are basically "free runs" of a given area that allow you to gather items and get your baring on a given terrain.
So do just that
Find weak animals (preferably one that wont attack back) and practice you moves on em ^_^ Perfect your swing and roll technique now as opposed to trying to do it while fighting a Ratholos or w/e. After you get that down it may be a nice idea to stroll around the area. Find all the little short cuts for the field. Then youll know your way around in a battle which can save you time when fighting a monster.
NOW lets try a guest. Say its a Yian Kut Ku in forest and hills
Take it slow your still learning its ok if you fail a few times (just dont tell anyone you got pwned by a Kut Ku ) Try to attack from the sides and watch his tail. Most wyverns in the game have the tail spin move, and they all hurt :P If you have pro blood in your veins maybe you can quickly figure out the sweet spot residing under moth enemies where you can stand and NOT get hit while they spin away and use it to attack. You still have to watch out tho, or you be trampled. The key to surviving early on is HIT AND ROLL. Dont be cocky. Run up to a side, hit 3-4 times, then roll away. Get an angle on it, and repeat.
Try some of this and lemme know if i help you any. If you have specifics thats good to ^_^

Thanks for the help! I'm gonna try again tonight, I took a break from it to play resistance. But anyways I will give it another shot tonight.

LOL, this whole time I thought the game was looking for quests to do with people online and I thought there was something wrong with my connection. But I found out yesterday that it's just searching for ad-hov. I was wondering why it said "channel automatic". It would be really sweet to play online with this game, then I could get some help plus it would make it alot more enjoyable.

yeah TECHNICALLY Monster hunter plays Ad-hoc with up to 3 friends. (and i leave it on Automatic connection when i play with others so im not constantly shifting)
HOWEVER!!!!! >_<
There ARE afew ways to play Monster hunter for PSP ONLINE!!!!! >_<
But you cant do it from with the PSP by itself. (You can download bonus quests with just the PSP if you can connect it to the internet)
Now i myself do not know how to do this FULLY. I know there are guides for it on this forum tho.....somewhere LOLZ
But you can either google "linkxai" Or "PSP ONLINE PLAY"
There's also a way to do it if you have a PS3. But like i said, details elude me atm.
I have ONE (count em...1) friend that actually plays monster hunter and we dont really play THAT much together anyway.
THE TRUE TEST OF A HUNTER IS THE SOLO RUN!!!! >_< lolz, but the game is better with friends.

Try to compete some of the training school courses as well. Get in as much practice as you can.
If you have anymore probs just ask. As soon as i get some time im hitting up MHU myself so WHOOOOO!! >_<

Cause you suck ;)
Don't worry you'll get better, I spent like 3 hours carrying a dragon egg away from a dragon and falling or making it too loud. Like Valisk said, go with sword and shield. Does your cat cook for you yet? Which Monster Hunter do you have btw?

just learn the monster attack patterns. once you mastered that, the game is easy as heck. of course it's easier said than done, but it's doable. by the way, if you have custom firmware, you could always use cw cheat.

Because the Japanese hate you.

Seriously though. This game is touted as a 500+ hour game.

The main thing you want to do is practice with your weapon of choice. It is always good to practice a couple of weapons, preferably a melee AND a ranged weapon.

That being said, even if you are decent (hell even if you are GOOD) you are going to spend a LOT of time grinding in this game.

For example, you will probably have to beat the first Big Wyvern (Yian Kut Ku for example) 2-3 times before you will have enough drops/carves to make 3 pieces of Armor. And each of those attempts will probably take at least 20-40 minutes. Assuming you don't fail the missions.

All that being said, this game is one that requires patience and lots of time.

And don't use CWcheats to make it easier. I did it with a previous one, and it was even less fun than dying all the time.

I have spent 60 hours so far in the new game, and I am just now getting comfortable with it. Before I could barely beat a monster with the RIGHT equipment, even after 2 or 3 times. Now I can usually beat one on the first try no matter what equipment I have.

Oh, and bombs and traps are your friend!

Anyway, keep trying, play with friends (or strangers with Xlink Kai, it really makes it more fun), and Grind Grind Grind!

Also if you are stuck, consult GameFaqs, or YouTube or Minegarde.net for strategies.

P.S. Here's a 'quick' tip for Getting a lot of money early on(it can help you buy lots of items for trap and bomb making):

1) Buy all the Garden Rows with your pokke points.
2) Buy as many Worms as you can afford
3) Once you get A 'Power Seed' or 3 (Armor Seeds work as well, but sell for 30 gold less) Go to the farm and plant them.
4) Then everything but the Worms (or Dung if you have it, but I would save it) should be grayed out.
5) Select the worms and hit X. It will fertilize the row bringing it to level 2. Do this one more time to bring it to level 3. This uses 5 worms per level. Do this for all 3 rows.
6) Do a quest, or training. Whether you fail or succeed go back to the farm to harvest your crop.
7) you should get about 7 seeds per 1 planted this way.
8) I typically do this till I have around 100 and sell all but 3.
9) at 180 a pop thats about 1800 gold with little labor.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the tip on the money making. I just booted up MHFU for the first time, it's also the first time I'll be playing a MH title.

I've heard MH and PS:P compared on several occasions, and from what I interpret, if I like PS:P I should downright love MH.

Anyone else have any other general advice for someone starting the game fresh for the first time?

I'll be starting off with sword+shield combo, and hopefully I'll have one buddy to play with, but I'm prepared to solo if need be (hell that's all I've done so far on PS:P). I have AdHoc party on my PS3 and Kai but regretably I am not back home at the moment and those devices are...

Wow, its been a while since I started new so I don't remember any tips, but keep everything you can for a long ways into the game. Later on, once you're sure you don't need the items or you can easily get the items later you can sell them for money.

The pokke farm is a great place for beginning supplies or to sell items for cash.

The sword and shield is an excellent beginning weapon, but I would try to master a few. I personally love the lance because of how versatile it is. It can do both cutting and impact damage, depending on what the monster is weakest too (but I wouldn't worry about that until later). It also has the best defence. But the downsides is that it is a slow moving weapon type and it takes some time to unleash a powerful weapon combo.

It all depends on what you like and what fighting style works best for you. Also remember that different weapons work best for different monsters.

Thanks for the advice.

I ended up going with the long sword. Liking it so far.
Pokke farm was good to me, got lots of stuff to help make new equipment there.

One question I've been wondering... how much weight does elemental defense actually hold compared to regular base defense. I've been trying to make an armor set for each element, but the abilities that come with the different sets just seem lame on some and not worthwhile overall even if it does have a good elemental defense.

Honestly I don't know of the impact any elemetal defense does. I have never bothered to make any of those resist sets since they are so situational. And I've never heard of anybody saying they need a +fire set. I guess the only thing I would worry about is trying to not have a -10 [insert element here] impact on any of my armor when going against a monster that uses that element as it's primary attack. Especially at lower armor levels where you can get killed in one hit sometimes. But at higher armor levels, it really doesn't matter.

It's a capcom game, so it's supposed to be hard but great =)
Not sure about which MH you are talking about but generally old hunters recommend the begginer use Lance first. As it provides good defence also familiarize you with all the basic move of this game.
If you dun like defence at all, long sword (Tachi) is the way to go.
Element defence is not necessary until much harder quests. You can use the resource from your farm and mining to upgrad your weapon first. (make a steel one , and upgrade it 2-3 times) Then the quests would be easier. Hope this helps =)
