I'm trying to back up some of my dvd's to digital files but am really hitting my head against a brick wall.

I am using AVS video converter. But when I select a 4:3 ratio, and then play it on my standard analogue TV, I get a very thinned out version to watch.

I'm pretty clueless and if anyone has any advice on how to proceed ripping files without seeing very thin and elongated people, this would be much appreciated.

What type of files are you starting with?

I'm opening the DVD and copying the ISO file.

In the program I am converting to AVI. The best I could get it is by using MPEG (DIVX/Xvid)with frame size of 720 x 480. But even that is not quite right.

Not sure if this is the info you were after?

If you're ripping DVDs, why do you need to convert them to play on your standard analogue TV?

The reason why is because I have a digital player in one of my rooms and the dvd player in that room broke. The kids are always trapsing around the house with their dvds, esp home movies from when they were kids as tehy love watching these. So I was hoping to be able to make digital files, store them on a portable HD and be able to play them.

Is this ok?
