Unable to play protected audio files.

I downloaded and was able to play some audio files in windows media player. Later when I tried to play the same files, I found out that they were protected. A pop up box appeared and stated that I do not have a license to play the music.
What kind of license will I need, to play these protected audio files?
What player is needed to open these kinds of files?

Are they WMA files? If so, the Windows Media would be played
by the windows media player. The license/DRM limits your usage
of the file and you may have to pay for them, although
some licenses are free.
