Hi there i have a HP Compaq nc6000. At first it Wouldnt turn on at the first attempt all that would happen was the LED on the laptop would come on then then the fan would start up but then it would go off, it wouldnt even get to the load up screen.
This could happen about 9 times, the on the 10th attempt it would come on and work fine.
I did a format and a fresh install just in case it was a virus but the same thing carried on happening.
Now for the last 3 days i havent been able to turn it on at all. It will just start the fan, light up the LED then cut off.
It has battery life because i have the charger plugged in when i try to turn it on ( charger LED lit indicating it is getting power)
Can anyone suggest what i can do, i was thinking of having a look inside but can anyone tell me what i should be looking for.
This does not look good and certainly sounds like a hardware problem as you are not even getting to the POST.
Laptops being prepriotory are not always easy to dissmantle\reassemble as the suppliers like you to send it to them, HP have a maintenance guide to help you do this however.
Check the flowchart for basic troubleshooting for no power before taking the plunge, give memory module a clean etc, try a replacement if you can get hold of one (same with power adaptor).
If you have warranty left i would suggest using it, go inside as a last resort.
If you decide to go inside be sure to use antistatic wrist strap, if you do not have one ground yourself regular by touching exposed metal of case.
You will be looking for any loose connections, especially regarding the CPU fan, purchase a can of compressed air and give motherboard and all parts a good blow out, if you remove CPU heatsink be sure to apply a thin layer of thermal grease on CPU before connecting heatsink back up.
Also look at solder on the underside of the motherboard, if any look black this may indicate it is dry and need resoldering (this is a last resort option).
If you are no comfortable bite the bullet and take it for repair.
As mentioned above I would say this is a hardware problem.
if its not even Posting I would check your Ram to make sure their ok IE not loose, dirty contacts or duff . also the last HP I fixed with this problem was simply the Hard drive had come slightly out of its housing, just try pushing it back in. What does puzzle me is the fact you have managed to reinstall the O/S!!
after reading the HP manual that was kindly posted, it seems that when i try to turn the laptop on it is not booting from the harddrive it is trying to boot from the disk drive ( this would make sense as i set the disk drive as primary boot device when i formatted)
so i have tried putting the xp disk in and booting from that but im getting the same problem.
IS there a way to change it to boot from hard drive even though i cant turn it on ? would removing the CMOS battery achieve this?
Sorry for keep making new posts ( icant see the edit button) i have got the machine to turn on now ! dont ask me how i just pressed the button and it came on. Is there anything i can check now i have it on to see where the fault could lie
Little confusing, is the laptop working OK now?, IF it is and you can enter the BIOS setup (usually F10 on HP laptops), just load the BIOS defaults by pressing the appropriate button (usually F9 with HP i believe but the BIOS setup screen will confirm the key). This will reset the BIOS settings to default just incase you have accidentaly changed one or two things in there. Remember to save your changes on exit.
Hi Jodav, it started to work, but i then shut it down to see if it would come back on then it wouldnt so i left it i have just got home from work so ill try and turn it on in a bit and ill report back
Cheers
Right i just tried to turn it on and it came on first time so i restored defaults in BIOS ill try it a few times in a bit to see if it turns on straight away and ill update you.
