System Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
GeForce3 Ti200
2-120GB HDD
512MB memory

Initally, my sony drive would burn backup copies of dvd's in approximately 20 minutes, and rip them with in depth analysis (dvdshrink) in about an hour. I was using both Imation DVD+R as well as Memorex DVD-R, same results with both brands. However, I was having about 10-15% failing. The burn would complete successfully, but the disks wouldn't even be detected in the Sony drive (or any other dvd-rom). So, I followed sony's instructions, removed all dvd burning software and utilities, and ran their 530a_20a firmware update. It completed successfully. Now I have not failed a single burn, BUT, it takes over 3.5 hours to rip with dvd shrink, and it averages 1.5 hours to burn a dvd on the exact same media i was using before. I have removed and reinstalled all the software, flashed the firmware again, tried specifying a faster write speed...all with the same long burn time.

Does anybody have any suggestions? My next thought would be format my HD and start with a fresh OS...but I would rather try other fixes prior to that. Help if you can. Thx

Check to see if your IDE Channels changed in device manager to PIO mode. You want DMA mode

The device is using PIO mode, and the drop down menu on the Secondary IDE Channel was set to use PIO. I changed it to 'DMA if available' reboote...rebooted...shutdown... and it still says PIO under current transfer mode. Any suggestions as to how to manhandle windows into using DMA instead of the PIO mode?

Cruester --- Thanks for the push in the right direction. I removed the secondary ide channel, scanned for new hardware, and after windows re-installed it, it was able to use DMA.

Many Thanks
