Hi everyone,
I really need some help. I've tried everything I can, and read all the posts in this forum, but nothing has fixed my drive.
Here's the deal.
Yesterday afternoon, it was working fine. Playing my DVDs, no worries. Then last night, it stopped working. After turning my computer on, it didn't recognise the drive: just didn't show up as being installed. So, I rebooted. Nothing. There was a DVD in there - I couldn't even eject to get it out. Rebooted a few more times, and managed to get it open as it was loading Win XP. Then, as XP was loading, it crashed. Rebooted. Drive seemed fine, computer recognised it. Put in a DVD, tried to play it in Power DVD. Said that the drive did not have a disc in it. Rebooted. Nothing. Didn't recognise it. Rebooted. Recognised it but wouldn't play. This went on for a while.
This afternoon, it still wouldn't work. I've tried the following:
* Tried to update driver. No new drivers.
* Uninstalling and reinstalling drive. This was a big mistake. When it reinstalled, it would only add it as a CD ROM, not a DVD Rom.
* System restore to three days ago. Same thing happened as was happening before I uninstalled the drive.
* System restore to a week ago. Same thing.
Short of reformatting, I've got no idea what to do. I really don't want to reformat, as I'm not too good technically, and all the computers I've reformatted in the past have been store bought or brandname, with all documentation, boot disks etc. This one was put together buy a friend who I no longer talk to. So I don't really have much to go with. And I've got too much stuff to back up.
Any ideas? Anyone? Please?
