First of all edit out the part about downloaded games b/c that is not allowed. How are you burning your backups? What program are you using and what media are you burning too?

A few pointers
1:Use the ridata disc
2:Don't use Nero use Alcohol 120%.
3:Burn at 1x.

What version is your PS2? The Swap Magic CD 3.0 is a problem for people with v9 and v10 PS2s though the DVD works fine. They come out with a Swap Magic 3.2 CD to fix the problem.
http://www.ps2cover.com/sm3pal.html There is a link to the PAL version.
http://www.ps2cover.com/sm3usa.html for the US NTSC version.

I haven't ever ordered from them so I don't know if they are any good or not, just did a quick search and saw they carried the newer version.

According to this thread http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/63802 they don't seem very reliable though I have never bought from them. Perhaps you could try ps2case.com or http://www.ps2fliptop.net/
