Not another DX50 (unknown) Virt. Dub question...

Hi All:
I am trying to convert avi's for use on a VCD. My primary tool is Tmpgenc, but some avi's won't load in Tmpgenc. So I tried using VirtualDub to re-encode the avi to another avi format. This worked for most files but several gave me the dreaded "DX50 (unknown)" error.
Even though I'm a newbie, I know this question has been asked before, I have been doing some research on the error, which should indicate a bad codec (if I understand what I've read). The answers I have seen suggest installing DiVX 5.02 Updated and Nimo 5 Build 8, which I have done, but I still get the error message from VirtualDub (v.1.4).
I then found a DivFix program that claims it can check for avi errors, fix truncated files, and reindex files.
DivFix did not fix the file so that VirtualDub will load the file but at least Tmpgenc will now load the file (with some caveats, TooLame crashes).

Now for the questions...
Does it sound like I have conflicting codecs that need to be removed?
How do I identify codecs and mark them for removal?
Am I getting corrupted AVI's (they play fine in Divx 5.02)?
What are the best tools for fixing bad files, also how do you get info about an avi?

Editting and making VCD's is way cooler than messing with tape ever was, but these little errors are quite frustating!
I appreciate any help you can provide.
