I have searched the archive (and the internet) and I can't find a solution to my particular problem.

My configuration:

2 IBM Thinkpad's
Celeron 677 & Pentium 4 1.8
312KB RAM Each
Compaq Firewire Card (2 ports)
Sony DRX-510UL External DVD writer
Windows XP Professional

Now here's the problem that only appeared last night. Previously my speeds were consistent and fast. The problem began last night.

When I click "Open Disc" and shrink begins to analyze the disc, the rate starts fast and then begins to fall with every second until it's extremely slow. The analysis usually takes less than two minutes, but last night it took 15 minutes after the rate dropped.

The same thing happens when Shrink starts to encode. The rate starts fast and then drops like a rock until it's very slow. On 5/2, encoded a disc in 30 minutes.
On 5/3, the same disc took 4 hours due to the very slow encode rate.

Now here's the kicker for all the advanced users....This problem applies to both Thinkpads. The rate is very slow now on both computers.

Drives are DMA enabled. No other programs running. Hard Drive Defragged.

I used Decryptor to rip and it was very fast, so the firewire connection is not a problem. It's something to do with DVD Shrink v. 3.1.7.6. To reiterate, the encoding just began to get slow, it has been working great.

Does anyone have a guess why the rate starts high and then drops exponentially on both computers? I wonder if anyone has ever heard of this.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

P.S. ScubaPete, I enjoy your informative posts, thanks.

Hi,

Were you using 3.1.7.6 before and after the slowdown, meaning that version worked ok and now it's slow?

Have you tried reinstalling Shrink or going back to an earlier version?

Do you use the same burner between the two thinkpads? It's interesting that the slowdown occurs on two separate laptops with the only common link being the burner but it's equally interesting that Decrypter works normally.

You mean the hard drives or do you have an internal DVD-ROM in the laptops?

Thanks for the reply.

Questions:

1) Yes, I was using the same version before and after the slowdown, so the version has not changed.

2) I have not tried reinstalling Shrink, but I think I will try that next, unless I find out the concrete solution.

3) One laptop has a DVD-ROM drive.

Still scratching my head....
