How slow can EAC be?

Loaded question, or what! I've only used EAC for a couple days with Lame to burn by CD's to MP3's. Normally, the wav portion is quick, but sometimes it can take hours to get through a CD. The CD's in question are in bad condition, so I should be greatful EAC was up to the task. What is the longest I should expect on a bad CD? 2 hours, 4 hours? It's a 48X CD, but EAC is showing a copy of .1X when it has trouble reading the bits. Is this normal?
