Help! Sony DVD burner won't do 1x?

Hey guys I recently decided to swap old my old reliable HP dvd200i for the multiformat Sony drives that can do both the -r and +r formats. I ordered the Sony 500a and Nero, or record now max won't let me record at 1x. It says 2x is the minimum, and I know the ps2 backups don't work well at that speed. Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or are all sony drives crap that cant actually burn at 1x?

If you burn it at 2x it should still work fine. It will make little to no difference if you were to burn it at 1x.
