I want to mod my ps2, but all I hear is bad things. I haven't read anything about any 1 modchip that does it all. And by "It all", i mean the following:

-Boots ALL backup PS2 games without swapping
-Boots ALL import PS2 games without swapping
-Boots ALL regular PS2 games
-Is basically "trouble-free", after being correctly intalled

Suggestions?

First you need to tell us what version PS2 you have. All chips do "it all" so to speek but there has been some trouble reported with DMS3 chips. The best chip in my oppinion right now is the Matrix Infinity. The DMS3 is a close second but still has some issues to resolve. But there are cheaper alternatives that work really well. Such as:

Duo 1-2 (the duo 1 only works w/ V1-7 systems, the duo 2 works w/ V1-10)

Magic V

Matrix MXL

I agree:
Duo - 17 wires for V1-8
Duo2 - same for V1-8 - 22 for V9&10

Matrix MXL2 - 18 wires?

Apple Pro V1-8 22 wires

all rock stable chips. Except for the matrix all very well priced - sub $20 USD.

Do all those Modchips let me play online with a legit online game? I mean, do I have to worry about them being detected or anything?
