I built a PC for a friend that includes an NEC 2500 burner and a Liteon DVD/CD-RW. I used an ABIT VT7 MB with a 3.0GHz CPU w/512MB corsair DDR PC3200.
Both optical drives play audio just fine from an Audio CD (MP3 or wav), or a DivX file.
Anytime I insert a DVD though, the audio won't play. The audio won't even play through DVD Shrink's preview.
I've tried using audio cables or not. I'm using an 80-pin IDE cable.
Any suggestions.

It sounds as if you do not have a DVD player installed on your system.
If you do have one installed, what is it & what are your audio settings on it please?

[FONT=Comic Sans MS]As a matter of fact, I installed both WinDVD Platinum v5.3 and PowerDVD v5.0.
One didn't work, so I tried installing the other, also.
The audio settings are whatever the default is.

I'm really at a loss to figure out why the audio doesn't play for DVDs. I even tried playing the DVD from the hard drive, to no avail.
ABIT won't answer my emails, so I don't know if returning the Mobo for exchange will solve anything.

Sounds like a audio codec issue.
This should help.

Did both these have all the correct extensions installed?
Did you try emailing support at intervideo & cyberlink? I have always found cyberink to be more than helpful, especially with configuration problems.....You did buy these 2 apps, didn't you?

Also, what soundcard are you using?

[FONT=Comic Sans MS] I installed the default extensions. I haven't emailed cyberlink yet.

Burner came with PowerDVD. One of the people at our PC Users group tried installing the WinDVD to see if it would work. It didn't, so we uninstalled it.

The sound card is the one on the mobo (AC97 codec). Remember, sounds play using any other source but DVDs.

Is the DVD drive set in Windows to play digital music, or analogue?

Try and play the dvd using Windows Media player,it will use the mpeg codec from power dvd.
Also, in media player click on tools>options>devices.
The dvd,cd-rom and speakers should be there.
Click on the speakers>properties.
Be certain that the correct audio device is being used.
Click on advanced>hardware and be certain that the audio codec along with the dvd-writer and the sound device are there.
These sound devices can be verified in Device Manager.
Hope this helps.

I finally fixed it using the MS DVD troubleshooter.
