I have a HP DVD +/- R +/- RW x8 i420 DVD Writer and I was wondering what is the best cd's and type to make copies of my games with. I have some Sony +r's and wanted to know if those would work for now til I get someone and wanted to know what kind I should get after that. Im gonna buy a 25 pack or 50 pack later today after i get paid, but didn't wanna buy something that wont work.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

swaowner: If you have some Sony+R to try and they do well for you, you probably can go ahead and get a 25 or 50 pack , especially if you are buying locally. There really is no brand that works all the time with every DVD writer. As Safc 66 says, here on Afterdawn the consensus is that OVERALL Ritek brand does really, really well for most combinations of writers/software and computers. If you can get Ritek locally where you live, go for it. Often though you need to get on line and order the Ritek discs. Like I said: if your Sony's did well and you can pick them up where you live, that probably is OK too.

Evening Siber, i personally haven't tried $ony media but in the past i've paid a lot of loot for shite media, which either won't write or won't read back. Lately i've been using RiDisc 4x dvd-r, which i can pick up for £35 per 100 at computer fairs here in the UK. I think i've burned approximately 150 of these discs, both for films & games, with zero problems, on my new Pioneer 107, so i'm always gonna recommend decent Ritek products (tho the Datasafe ones are meant to be a bit moody ?).Like you said, if a particular brand does well for you, stick by it. What do you prefer, btw ?

I'm relatively new to burning. Must have burned 70-80 by now. I did have a couple of Sony's that came with a Sony510UL external drive. Did fine. Then I had a 50 4X TDK+R. The first 5-6 were awful but the problem was fixed by updating the Firmware on a LiteOn 411. Because of Afterdawn I have now been using mostly Ritek 8X DVD+R. Good results on every drive except a NEC2500. I've also had 2-3 coasters when trying to burn 'on the fly' using Intervideo DVDCopy2. I think Ritek is overall really the best but no combination is perfect.

On-the-fly ain't recommended really, too risky. You're absolutely right though, no combination is perfect. Personally, i use
Movies :-

Dvd Decrypter to rip
DVD2One to compress
Nero6.3.1.3 to burn

Games

DVD Decrypter ISO Read--> ISO Write

It's whatever bats & bowls for ya !

I've just been experimenting really. I haven't even started with games yet. DVD Shrink is a really amazing product. It is the only program that lets you so clearly pick and choose what you want. If I just want one the movie with 1 soundtrack, I can't think of any better program...As I am very lazy, I have been looking for other software and I've fiddled with DVD Rebuilder, 1Click DVD Copy, DVD Cloner, CloneDVD, Nero Recode, Intervideo DVDCopy2, etc.. I like the quality of the picture with Intervideo but in the end - for my lazy bones - Shrink + Nero is still the one I use the most.

Dene,

With your 107, what speed do you read at for backing up DVD games? I have a 107 and am using decrypter, but with WRC3 at least it gets hung up in the menus. I am reading at 12x (as this is all the drive will do) but am writing at 1x - any thoughts? Ta.

Lol @ Siber, just cos i'm classed as Member & yourself as Junior Member, it don't mean shit. If you've got advice, dish it out mate. This place is for all of us users, no matter what status :-), still learning all the time.

Avman, to be honest i don't read with me 107, got a seperate dvd rom for that, hopefully it will save wear & tear on the burner in the long run. I'll try ripping with it as soon as i've got a bit of time, see how it performs. Perhaps the WRC3 disc you're trying to backup is a bit dirty / scratched ??

Good luck & welcome to the new users

Dene
