I'm new here, so obviously not too steeped in the traditions of this site; however, I could not find the answer to my question, so I decided to post.
I purchased a NEC DVD R/W from TigerDirect. Okay, okay,
I hadn't even heard of this website before then ! I purchased 25 DVD-R/W's too. Anyway, I've used Shrink and things went great, except for the 1X speed of the drive. Movies were great with NO problems at all. I'm buying Maxell DVD/R's now to do the 'real thing'.
My questions are these:

1] What is one of the better, or best, DVD R/W's now; I
have a Pentium 4 2.8 w/1GB memory running Win XP Pro right now, with an Adaptec 39320D Ultra320 SCSI adapter w/2 Seagate 36GB drives, plus a very fast 180GB IDE backup; I also have SUSE Linux 9.1 not yet installed. I'm seriously thinking of going with an AMD 64 bit processor and board soon, but I'm not sure, I'm kinda' trying to wait out the 64 bit revolution, and not be a guinea pig. Whatever, what I stated is what I have NOW.

2] Does XP record and send all your DVD activity to whoever (MSFT, RIAA, whoever......) ???
That's not a big problem, because I have a ghost image
of my system now, and many times before. I could simply
format my C drive and restore the ghost image.
I guess I'm just really paranoid, but I'm sure I'm not a total minority. I have ZAP firewall, Linux-based hardware firewall/router, PestPatrol, SpyBot, SpySweeper, a hosts file (which I try to keep updated),
BoClean, and IE and NS Clean, and peerguardian.
Any comments appreciated. I'm new here, so cut me some slack if possible :):) !!!!!!
TIA.
