Ok, now I convert anime to dvd almost every day, go through the usual process of resaving the avi in virtual dub and separating in tmpg bla bla...but now I have run along this movie that I can only seem to get in MKV (Mastroka) format.

Now this particular file has about 4 audio streams and one english sub stream, and my goal is to end up with an avi, a japanese separate audio file, and I already have separated the subtitle srt file from it.

Alright now down to my problem. I have read countless guides and tried all sorts of programs, but to no avail. I go into virtualdubmod, try a direct stream copy with everything disabled except the audio stream and subtitle stream i want, and try to make it into an avi. But all that seems to happen is I play a subtitle-less, video, and I get an audio error that says that there is no known tag for 0x000 audio data. I have every codec known to man, so I'm not sure why I get that error, but I always do. I've tried resaving the mkv to an mkv with just my two streams, and then saving that, but the same problem. I've tried Avi2wav, but the same corrupt audio problem.

Basically, what I want to know is if anyone could reply with a sort of mini guide per say, just telling me what prog to separate the streams with, how to fix that audio prob, and what prog to use to combine them together. If anyone could help me...I'll do anything for you...anything...:)

Hi there,

this won't be a minguide per se, but since i 've had similar problems with mkv files this is what i did:

- open the mkv file in virtualdubmod
- select the text stream you want in the stream list and press Demux, now you have a srt file
- convert the srt file with a sub program (i use subcreator) to a ssa format.
- select the audio stream you want in the streamlist and press Demux, you now have an ogg audio file.
- convert the ogg file to a wav file (i use oggdropXPd).
- Now getting it all together, you will use the frameserver of virtualdubmod, this what you have to do...
- first you need to have the VirtualDub subtitler plugin installed in the virtualdubmod\plugins directory, if so select in virtualdubmod video-->filters-->add and select the subtitler plugin and load the ssa file you just previously made.
- Now select file --> start frameserver and save this with a .vdr extension(otherwise it won't have any extension i think), there should be a small box now in your window, leave it be....
- Now open TMPGEnc and select the template you use for this(like fps 23,976 and 48000 Hz, or anything custom you use).
- In the select source file dialog box, open for the video file the .vdr file you saved in virtualdubmod(you have to select the all files selection in the open box, otherwise you won't see it), select for the audio file the wav file you made......the rest should be obvious if you use TMPGEnc on a regular base......

One final remark, it sometimes happens that TMPGEnc won't open a vdr file, i have no remedy for that except trying to open it a couple of times in sequence an it sometimes comes through...

hope to have given you some tips and good luck!
