I followed some instructions and backed up a DVD game to CD but every time i try and load the game using the CD swap magic 3 disk it takes me to the default ps2 disk selection page where i have a choice to load the disk or view my memory card and when i click the disk the screen goes black it loads then goes back to to the selection screen.

Does this mean i backed it up wrong or what?

Would a CD loader work? And why wont my swap magic load it?

if the game is over 650megs, the swap magic cd isn't big enough to load it. Thats why you need breaker pro.
