I want to be able to legally download mp3s, however, I dont like the way Napster does it. (9.95 a month unlimited songs but cant be burned on a cd, or 99 cents per song to be burned) I was wondering what anyone would recommend as far as a legal way to do it that lets you have a monthly rate for unlimited downloads that you can burn on cds? Thanks.
Not many of the well known stores support MP3 downloads as the labels have thus far been more comfortable with DRM-enabled formats (i.e. formats that restrict your control over the content you've purchased with Digital Rights Management technology). Thus the stores that do sell MP3 tracks generally don't carry all the artists you might want.
Then there's another option, that may not be technically illegal (or maybe it is). It's a Russian outfit at:
http://www.allofmp3.com These guys rely on a loophole in Russian law to sell pretty much any artist/album/track as MP3s.
I've been using this new used CD site called BarterBee.com - for a small fee
(around $3) per month, you can list your cds (all you need is the artist or
title, after searching on them the database will give you a list with extensive
information on each) for people to request... fulfilling a request gives you
points which can be used to request other people's cds. The fee also provides
for special padded envelopes to send the discs in.. it works pretty nicely, kind of ebay-like.
Also, they give you 4 points automatically when you sign up and list at least
5 cds to trade to start out with... right now the average cd is listed for
1 to 2 points... so that's a couple of free CDs right off the bat, pretty much.
