Liteon, Pioneer, Sony, NEC,... they are all very similar in quality. Right now there is a race going on towards faster and faster burning...4X, 8X, 12X, etc. Don't get caught up in it. FAST does not mean BETTER.
In practical terms, once you get past 4X there really isn't much difference. Is it really that important to burn in 6 or 8 minutes versus 12 minutes..? I think you can pick up a very good (internal) burner for $80 or so...

I recomend getting the following:
Pioneer DVR-107 8X DVR-DVR-107-B
$90 bucks including shipping at directron.com
Fast as hell and came with Nero (I luv mine).
Also use Ritek disks and you will never burn a coaster.
PS: Just don't ever by an NEC burner.
Good luck

To the moderator
Good point regarding why this is media. But must say that because so many burners are so crazy over what media they will (or will not burn) the two subjects can sometimes cross over an actual subject line. Some people like + media over -R, but if you by a certain burner you can get stuck with ony one choice.
dont-cha think?

I have an NEC 2500a, flashed to ver 1.07, no problems.
and a liteon 451s flashed to 851s ver: HSOC
Using Ridata G04 -r media silver matte, but have used junk like khypermeida and compusa in the liteon. never a bad burn
The NEC is new.
NP with either, they are great.

Why not?

I use 2 Liteon burners, 2 NEC burners (1300 + 2500), 2 Pacific Digital/Sam's Club specials, a Sony 510 external burner, a Sony 700 DL burner and I really cannot tell you any one of them is better than the others. When I did have an occasional 'bad media' problem, it was usually solved by updating the firmware. Buy CHEAP unless you are a speed freak or you like to brag about having a Plextor...

I made the MISTAKE of getting an NEC ND 1100-A burner with my computer and all I seemed to make was coasters. Not that I hate all NEC but I have decided better safe than sorry (for burner anyway).
Go check any site regarding this (NEC) burner and I garentee you will agree with my post.

If the kid has the bucks, why not, pay more for the same thing that he'll get in the liteon or the nec.

That was his question, how to get a burner without paying too much (my email was 90 bucks). I have Plaxter and for what he need's the Pioneer will do fine. I don't care what you say about NEC (it sucks) and will never recomend it..
Come on, for 90 bucks how coulod he go wrong??

If you have $120 there's no decision to be made - get the Pioneer 107D, end of story.
My killer sig came courtesy of bb "El Jefe" mayo.

If you have a problem with a single DVD burner from a certain manufacturer and you decide to never want to deal with that manufacturer again because, obviously, all their burners must be 'S..t', that would be very similar to giving up all women because one single girlfriend gave you the shaft.
