DVD Recorder - please help!

Hi, my old Pioneer XV-DV55 has given up the ghost and packed in. It's tuner and audio system are all working fine, it just won't play DVD's (Mpex? card or something has gone, so I've been told) My question is, can I just buy a cheap DVD recorder and plug it into my DV55 and use the sound quaility from the DV55 while watching the DVD on the new recorder?
If it is possible to do then how much should I be looking to spend and should I just be going for a bottom of the range recorder as I've been told that my old DV55 still has a good quailty sound system on board.
