What's the deal with patching?

I recently got a moded ps2 so i got some questions about patching. I've tried to read up on it but there isn't alot of good info. First off, when do you have to patch games? Does patching depend on what mod chip you have? For example, with some mod chips must you patch the game to play the backup and with other chips maybe you don't have to? Finally, where do you go to find these patches and how do you apply them? I got a DMS3 mod incase your wondering.

You dont have to patch games with the DMS3 inless you want to go online

PS1 games that have anti mod protection need either a ppf patch or the gameshark anti mod bypass codes to boot them. THe DMS3 might be able to boot some anti mod PS1 games but I'm not sure on that.

the DMS3 can boot antimod games as long as you have a v9 or v10 Ps2. But all others u u have to patch

Ok, thanks. I got a dms3 with a v9. So if i wanted to backup any of my online games where would i get these patches?

Patching can be for online, pal/ntsc, fix, nomod etc.

If you backup your games you just backup the dms from the orig and patch the backup using tools like WinDIP...
