DVD-R boot issues

I can't seem to boot any DVD-R (game) backups. I've tried both Alcohol and DVD-Decrypter @ 2x with the same result; "Insert Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc". The game is Gran Turismo 3, the only original game I have.
The truth to be told, I can't even remember what modchip I have since it's been so long since I used my Ps2. It's a V4 350004, if I remember correctly. I believe it's one of the first Messiah chips since the guy that originally bought and installed the chip (a loooong time ago) complained about the amount of solder points. I did however burn a DVD-R movie just to check if the console could read DVD-Rs, which it did without problems and I have a ton of ripped PS2 games on CD-Rs that work without problems.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
