I believe this is the OEM version of the DRU-510, which would mean there's no good hacked firmware, except that there might be one that lets you change it to a retail version which in Sony's case probably means more official firmware updates available.

Here's link to Sony firmware update page, including the OEM versions. They list a firmware upgrade for the DW-14A on this page, version 1.0d, I've got this burner with version 1.0c, works great, no coasters if you use the right software, I even surf the internet and use my computer for other things will it burns with its 8meg buffer.

Once you've flashed your drive to a DRU-510 don't use the OEM drivers use only those that are for the DRU-510 bcause you burner will no longer be an OEM.

If you've successfully flashed the firmware hack, then from here on in you treat exactly as you would any retail verion of the Sony DRU-510. You use only the latest firmware updates by Sony. Just forget what it was and go on the assumption that it is and has always been a DRU-510.

Well I probably should have left well enough alone. I burned the flash to change from the dw-u14a to a dru-510a. Then updated to 1.0d. Now my dvd xcopy program won't recognize the drive.
Anyone have a copy of the dw-u14a firmware or know where to get it?

Are you sure the firmware took? Have you tried to see if Nero info tool recognizes your drive and it will also give you your current firmware revision number.

Windows reports the drive as a dru-510a. I found a copy of the dw-u14a firmware, but of course, when I try to burn the flash, the program doesn't find a compatible drive anymore.
I downloaded the Nero software from the link you gave me and it reports the drive as a Sony DVD RW dru-510a.

It reports the firmware as version V1.0c which is correct as I reburned it from a 1.0d to 1.0c just to see if that would make a difference with the dvd xcopy software--it didn't.

Try this, on your desktop, right click on my computer, choose hardware, then Device Manager, go to DVD/CD-Rom drives, click the plus (+) sign to expand it, identify your drive model/number, right click on it and from the menu choose uninstall. Then reboot your computer and let it reinstall the drive and then try DVDXcopy again.

Unfortunately I still have the same problem. On further examination of the problem, I find:
When XP reinstalls the drive, it first finds the drive and indentifies it as a Sony DVD-RW drive and then also recognizes it as a CD-Rom drive. In windows explorer the drive (F:) is labeled as a DVD-RW until a blank DVD-R disk is loaded, when the blank DVD is loaded the drive designation changes to CD Drive. I can't say if this phenomenon was there when the drive was identified as a DW-u14a drive. My guess is that this is normal when using XP and not Nero or xcopy as according to a posting on the Microsoft winXP knowledge base(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818733&Product=winxp), XP doesn't know how to handle DVD-RW media. Apparently the UDFS driver for the DVD is a 16 block packet length and 32 blocks for a CD (sounds backwards) anyway XP attempts to use the 32 block length, they acknowedge this flaw and elude to an upcoming fix.
What is curious is that the DVD xcopy application, from all indications, appears to not recognize the F: drive and so attempts to use only the E: drive in my system which is only a DVD read drive and so it reports it as not being ready. The only thing that has changed since xcopy was working is the flash change and I don't as yet, have a good explanation as to why this should have affected how xcopy recognizes the sony drive.
