Someone kindly directed me to a link where a member explained how to back up a PS2 game, but to be honest it confused me even more, too technical too early.... All I have is a standard off the shelf PS2 console, not chipped, (couldn't even tell you what type of chip it had in it). How and where do I start to back a PS2 game like Gran Turismo 3. I have DVD decrypter and Shrink. Can anyone give me step by step instructions in laymens terms?
Thanks kindly.

You don't need to shrink PS2 games. If you have a DVD burner just use whatever software that came with it to do a disc to disc copy and it should work fine. Use blank CD's for CD-ROM based games (purple bottom) and blank DVD-R's for the DVD-ROM based games (silver bottom). I know many newer PS2's read DVD+R's but to keep things simple, stick with -R's until you know for sure.

Really, it's just that simple??? Just copy? (Not that I'm complaining)
Don't PS2 games have the same sort of copy protection coding as movies?. I'm also presuming PS2 game are manufactured on the normal 4.7GB discs not the 9.4GB discs found on commercially made DVD movies?
Also you mentioned that use DVD for silver discs and CD's for purple discs, this the other way around to normal then as I thought purple discs signified DVD.
By the way thanks for the info much appreciated

Let me see if I can address all of your response:
First of all, yes, it's that simple. The copy protections implimented by a select few PS2 titles do not affect your PC's ability to copy the disc what so ever. The vast majority of PS2 DVD games are 4.7GB disc with a few exceptions such as Xenosaga, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and a few others. Those games are special cases and if you're a beginner, I wouldn't bother with those yet until you get the basics down. Beside, Sony's DRU-700 Dual-layer burner just came out and it looks like it can take care of those games fine. And to confirm, the purple discs are CD's and the silver discs are DVD's.

I don't think we mentioned yet also that you will need to do some kind of modification to your PS2 whether it be in the form of a modchip installation or use the Swap Magic discs in order to boot your backups once you successfully burn them.

yes, ps2 has a different type of copy protection. You need a modd chip or swap magic to bypass this copy protection when you use a backup.

Most games will fit on a standard 4.7gb dvd-+R disc, just a few games are larger than 4.7gb disc, (just a few)
You do need a modd chip or fliptop or somthing to beable to play backup's, or you will get a red screen saying "You DUMBY, PUT THE ORIGINAL IN" -jesskiddn-

Ah, yes I thought there was more to it.
"Swap Magic discs in order to boot your backups once you successfully burn them". Can you explain a little further what this means and how to do it, and what a Swap Magic disc is, Ice Monkey??.
Thanks again.

I don't use the Swap Magic disc so I can't really provide you with the details on usage but here's what's involved with using them. You can use them in conjunction with either a flip-top cover that replaced the original PS2 upper casing, a slide-card to manually open the CD tray without pressing the Eject button, or with a no-solder mod which I do not recommend as how they have been known to blow fuses in the PS2.

So let me get this straight, I can easily copy the discs, say using Nero but they won't play unless I've modified the PS2 in some way or somehow get the disc to play without pressing eject? I take it you've modified the chip to play backups rather than using these other methods "swap magic". Is it easy to get these mods done, or can you buy a mod chip and put it in yourself?

Installing a no-swap modchip is complicated but once installed operation of the PS2 is fairly simple and the eject button is not an issue. Using the Swap Magic discs method is relatively non-invasive due to flip-top covers and no-solder chips being easy to moderately difficult to install, however, operation requires several swaps and many issues arise which are addressed by the bulk of the posts on this board. People with modchips generally have fewer issues getting backups to boot but have more problems playing online and using the official Sony HDD.

Question, I myself have tried copying a PS2 dvd game,AceCombat 04. I can copy it ok [no errors] to a DVD disc but when its placed in my PS2 consol; it presents a small title of the game and then it stalls in a blank screen. what could be the problem?
I understand the process of copying DVD movies and have done so with DVD Shrink and then Roxie.

Most games you can backup by just throwing it into a program like Nero and doing CD or DVD copy.
For playing them, modchips are the nicest in the end. But they are the most risky and difficult immediately. For Swap Magic booting, it's really easy, and not very risky. Unless you get really annoyed by swapping, or you can easily get a professional to install a modchip, swap discs are a good way to go. But by all means, if you can get a chip installed (and you trust them not to damage your ps2) then go for it. I started with a swap trick on my PSx, and later got a PSOne which I had modded, installed by a local professional. For PS2 I'm currently using SwapDiscs, but again eventually I may get another and have a professional install a modchip.
