i can open and re encode the first file vts_04_01 with out any problems. but when i open the next vts_04_02 file i get " unable to open file" this message comes up on rempg & cce. it hapens on different films as well. Help i am going crazy. I am running windows xp on a high spec machine with plenty of HD space.

Bilbo,
it may be that you haven't demultiplexed all your VOB files.
It depends on how you are ripping the DVD. If you are using 'IFO Parsing' then click on the 'Stream Processing' tab and select just the video and audio stream you want. Otherwise if you are using the the 'File Ripping' mode then you right click after selecting all the VOB files that comprise the main movie and select stream processing, this takes a minute to complete. Again select the streams you want.

With both methods you have to click the 'Demux to file' for each stream. Otherwise you will only end up with the first VOB demultiplexed.
Once you have demuxed a VOB there should be 2 files for each VTS file, a movie file with the extension m2v and an audio one with extension ac3 (ie. if you selected the dolby digital stream). It is these m2v files that are used by mpeg (re)encoders.

Hope that helps.

When I try to get reMpeg2 to decode it appears to just be sitting there? Is it really that slow? Should I just let it run? It appears that nothing is happening...? I am running XP pro and the newest reMpeg2, the open file with the cffl? seems to work, it's just the encode that doesn't

Depends on the speed of your pc. A movie takes me about 9 hours to encode. (On best quality settings)

Menmaddi,

What are the best quality settings in ReMpeg ?

I have used ReMpeg for 2 movies & get sort of jumpy sections all the way through the movies. I am not changing any of the default settings apart from the resolution which I set to 720x480. I am reducing the bitrate to about 67%.

Cheers.

Z3!

Once you go below 80% on the bit rate setting you can start to see the loss of picture quality. Why are you going that low? Is it because of your original file size?

When I finish editing and see my file size that's when I make the decision to reencode or to burn to 2 discs. I would rather get up and change the disc than watch a shitty picture.

When you are rencoding click on statistics and watch the green and yellow stat lines, if they aren't pretty much on top of each other most of the time you are likely to end up with sacrificed quality.

I usually set the bit rate as high as I can, move up the bit allocation adjustments by 10% and always select Full in search tecnique, output res to 720 and frame mode to progressive.

Sounds like you might need to think about splitting to 2 DVD-R.

Thanks menmaddi.

Yeah, I've been squashing them down to 67% to get a movie on one disc. I will try setting the search technique to Full though & see if that improves the quality before splitting to 2 DVD-Rs.

Do you know where I can find a guide that explains the settings on ReMpeg ?

Also, does Tmpg give better results ? I tried it a couples of times with the trial version but had A/V sync problems...... is it worth me pursuing (bearing in mind I might have a divorce on my hands if I spend many more nights trying to crack this !!!)

Cheers mate.

When you downloaded Rempeg2 there should have been an attached file. README. That gives a little help but it's still trial and error for me.

As for TMPEG I tried it but it kept freezing up on me. You then also have to use DVD2AVI and the audio is seperate so I went with Rmpeg2. I have heard that the quality can be better but I don't know how much better.

As for the looming divorce, I would split to 2 DVD-Rs then. The newest version of Ifoedit (094) makes it even easier. It puts all the files you need in each folder.

Maybe AfterDawn could start a forum for our wives to complain and get counseling on their obsessed husbands:0 Don't tell her I said that!

Hi all. I've tried to copy using two methods/sites. The first http://www.hkruse.dircon.co.uk/ to burn DVD-9 to single DVD-5 using DVD+R/+RW burning/media. The end result had great sound that was in sync with the picture, but the picture was bad because it had digital blocking over the faces, etc. I used ReMPEG2 with that method. I've read that ReMPEG2 has problems with WarnerBrother movies as their start is interlaced and the rest of the movie is non-interlaced or something.

The other method I used was from this site http://www.digital-forums.com/dvd2dvdr/intro.htm , only I used Nero Burning ROM because Gear Pro DVD doesn't allow me to burn with my DVD+R/+RW writer/media. This method uses TMPGEnc and my picture quality was awsome this time and the sound was awsome as well. HOWEVER, the sound was off by like .2 seconds having the old mouthed over karate movie touch. I can hear the sound sometimes before I see the mouths moving in sync. I don't know how to fix that? Any suggestions?

I was also told by another forum member to burn DVD-9 to two discs using only DVD Decrypter, IfoEdit, and Nero Burning ROM. This method should work fine, but I've not tried it yet.

I really like TMPGEnc thus far as the picture quality is awsome for DVD and VCD. I download movies and split and convert them using TMPGEnc and burn to VCD using Nero and have great results.
