I decided to back up my PS games, but when I tried to play one to test one, it didn't work. The game that didn't work was Chrono Cross cd1, and I used Alcohol 120%. When I put in the game, a red screen popped up on my PS2, saying to insert a PS or PS2 game.I ran ClonyXXL, and it said the CD has Libcrypt as protection. Did I do anything wrong? Can anyone help me?

I downloaded it because I didn't know how to make it into an image. Do I need a modchip?

The answer to your question is most likely 'yes.' Here's why: To prevent people from just copying games like rabbits multiply, the ps1, psx, and ps2 consoles all have copy protection. A certain code is written to a sector of the disk that normal CD/DVD burners can't write to. Hence your dilemma, you have burned a disc without that code to boot it (Boot means how the PS2 starts the disk up). So here are your avaiable solutions. 1) Get a modchip (most require soldering, if you're not up to that try to find a solderless one that works with your version of ps2), or 2) If you're only trying to back up PSX disks, than purchase a gameshark or action replay and either a flip top case or a slide card in order to "swap" the disk. Swapping is a method of using one disk to start the system up and without pressing eject (because that tells the ps2 to check for that code again), replacing the disk with a back-up or import. Hope this helps.

There are no games that do not need a modchip. The protection that prevents the PS1 from booting copied games is encoded into each and every PS1 game disc. You must use a modchip or purchase a boot disc to play PS1 game backups on a PS1 system.

Sorry, didn't realize you were using a PS2. You still need a modchip to play game backups.

Right, there are no games that once burned will boot on the ps2, ps1, or psx consoles. For a ps2 you need a modchip or a swap method such as a flip top case with swap magic or a slide card with swap magic. There's no escaping this at this point in time, and I highly doubt we'll ever escape this. Heck, we can't even fake a TOC refresh yet (We need someone to invent a memcard exploit for that or something).

There are no games that I'm aware of that have such a feature. All Sony manufactured Playstation 1 and 2 discs are designed to authenticate each time they are inserted. The only way to swap in a backup disc is by using something Swap Magic for the PS2 or PSXchange if you are working with a Playstation 1.
