I looked through the forums and couldn't find a related topic. Most people have issues with their DVD's not playing on a particular DVD standalone player. Here is where my issue differs:
I have two separate PC's, both with equivalent specs. Both are running Windows XP, both are using the newest versions of DVDShrink and Nero and DVDDecrypter. I am also using the SAME DVD media on both computers, Ritek G04 at 4X. The only true difference is that the first computer has an internal Sony DRU-500 DVD burner and the second computer has an external USB 2.0 Lite-On LDW-815S burner.
The discs burned on the Sony play fine on my Panasonic standalone player. The discs burned on the Lite-On ALL show up as not valid formats. The settings on the recording software are the same, so I really have no idea what happens. All DVD's play fine both on my desktop computers as well as my laptop.
When the Lite-On burns a DVD it says it completed successfully, so I don't know where the issue is. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
To recap:
Same OS
Same Burning/Ripping/Encoding Software
Same Media
Same Standalone player
Different burner
Another strange issue was when using InstantDVD, the discs burned in the Sony played fine on my laptop and standalone player. The discs burned in the Lite-On played fine in the standalone, but refused to play in my laptop DVD-ROM drive, once again using Ritek G04 discs.

I updated the firmware to the newest version available. Now, the disc is recognized in the Panasonic standalone player, but when it starts to play, it skips and pauses so much that it's completely unwatchable.
The drive also has a firewire connector that I can use. Anyone here think that switching from USB 2.0 to firewire will make a difference? What about pulling the drive out of the external enclosure and connecting it via the IDE channel? I'm tired of wasting perfectly good Ritek discs on this burner.

I'll give this go. My first thought is to open Nero Info Tools and check two things. You will see an ASPI tab, and a Configuration tab. On ASPI, check to see that you have the "green bar" on the Nero ASPI and the System ASPI pull downs. If you don't, please advise, as this is a problem.
The second thing is the System Configuration...which will show your IDE channels and if the drives are set to DMA. I don't know if a USB drive would show up here because I don't use externals, but if it does, please list the info.
I also think you have a good idea about testing the external on the IDE channel. When you do, check it with the Nero Info Tools. If you need more info on Nero Tools, let me know.

Added On. Before you change your drives around, will you check to see if an original DVD plays OK?

As far as transfer speeds, theoretically USB 2.0 has a higher transfer speed but in practice there's no difference.
Have you tried burning at a slower speed with the Lite On? It may make a difference for the Panasonic player.
Expanding on Doc409's advice, ForceASPI 1.8 is a good one and easy to install. Here's a link:

There's instructions as well as a download for ASPICHK which tends to be a bit more accurate than Nero Info Tools in regards to showing a functional ASPI.

Well, I installed the ASPI drivers. It didn't seem to help. I even burned at a slower speed of 2X and the DVD is still often not recognized, or when it is recognized, skips madly and also pixelates. I'm starting to run out of ideas...

...and I/we can't help you if you won't reply with the information I asked for. There is still more to do, but we need to be thorough here, or we could waste everyone's time.
Please re-read my July 1st post...and provide the info requested.

Try different media, one likes the Riteks the other doesn't. One size does not fit all.

1. check to see that you have the "green bar" on the Nero ASPI and the System ASPI pull downs
-both bars are green
2. second thing is the System Configuration...which will show your IDE channels and if the drives are set to DMA
-There is no DMA option for a USB drive
3. I also think you have a good idea about testing the external on the IDE channel.
-Haven't had a chance to take the drive out of the external enclosure.
4. Added On. Before you change your drives around, will you check to see if an original DVD plays OK?
-Plays movie DVD's just fine.
I'm planning to burn a different brand disc in the drive and see if the results are the same...

Thanks for anwering my questions.
When you talk about burning with the external, were you running Shrink? It sounds like you were, but I wanted to confirm.
and to confirm...is your Liteon now updated to the latest firmware as Nephilim suggested? Go to the factory site and find out?

Problem solved!
This is such a rookie mistake. The burner as it came packaged, was recognized as a Liteon 851S. All the discs that were burned with the drive were unreadable by the Panasonic standalone player. When I updated the firmware to the newest one, I updated it using the 851S firmware. Today, after I burned the 10th bad disc, I went back to the Liteon website and looked around. It appears, the external drive is considered to be the 851SX. When I used that firmware to upgrade the drive, all the burns have been PERFECT.
I think the drive as shipped by Buslink came with the WRONG firmware. Meaning, I think they took the internal IDE drive and just shoved it into a external enclosure without adjusting the firmware.
Hope this helps someone else out there who may have a similar problem...
Thanks for all your suggestions.

That's good news. I wouldn't call it a "rookie" mistake, though, just because it seems simple now. Drive numbers do get mixed.
Drives being shipped without the latest firmware is also fairly common. If you'll notice, it was the first suggestion you got.
