I am using DVD Shrink compress a DVD9 to under 4.6 Gigs, then using nero rom burner to burn the compressed file to DVD-R.
My problem is that with Nero 6, after it writes the lead in an error occurs where it says that the burn has failed due to an illegal disc.
I have successfully used DVDecrypter several times for DVD5's so I do not belive the problem is with my drive or my media so I am assuming the the problem lies within Nero itself.
Could there be a setting that I need to adjust?
Should I try a program other than Nero, and if so which one?
I have used the AFTERDAWN.COM guide to DVD Shrink and burning with Nero exactly as stated, so I am pretty confident that I am doing the whole process correctly.
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

If you've shrunk to an .iso file (instead of a video_ts folder full of files), you can burn that .iso file with Decrypter, by-passing Nero altogether. Have you tried this?
Also are you sure it's not the media? Is Nero trying to tell you something when it says it's an "illegal" disc -- e.g., it's DVD-R when your burner only burns DVD+R or something?
Karen H.--Dell Optiplex GX240, P4 1.50ghz, 256mb RAM (yeah, I need more), Windows XP Pro w/SP1, 80gb c: drive (replaced the 20gb c: that crashed), 126gb i: drive, 124gb j: drive, 500gb external hard drive partitioned into k: and l: drives, Sony DDU1621/C1 DVD-ROM to rip/encode, Sony DRX-530UL to burn, new Sony DRX-840U to burn DL discs ... need a new computer to go with it!!

I haven't tried shrinking to an ISO. That should work for me, I just have to figure out how to do it. I have Never used DVD Shrink or Nero before trying to rip this DVD.
I am 99% sure that it is not the media, as I have used it many times backing up disks with DVD Decryptor. Thanks for the ISO suggestion.

RJFreeman,
Your not alone... I too never got Burning ROM to work. Followed the guide also, and always got some error(think it was invalid file).
I use Nero Express and works everytime. You should try it. You've got 2 files (audio_ts and video_ts), don't worry about the audio file its empty.
1) Open Nero Express, choose DVD-Video Files
2) Double click the video_ts file
3) On the right, click add
4) Browse for the movie file you wanna burn, open the video_ts folder, add all of those file, click finish
5) Click next, name your disc, click burn.

It's been reported in other forums that some folks are having trouble with the latest Nero Version 6.3.1.15, and are going back to 6.3.1.10. Did you update recently?

I was using the latest version of Nero. Right after I installed it, everything has been going screwy with my DVD burner.
I have a DVD RW DW-U18A UYS1
the current profile is DVD-R
I was able to use DVD Decryptor easily before, now all these errors have been popping up.
Is a firmware update something to consider. I know very little about what firmware really is.

Sounds like the upgrade did it to you. Are you able to uninstall Nero and then re-install the previous version? That's the fix others have used.
A firmware upgrade changes the software instructions stored on your burner. I believe most mfgr's will tell you what each upgrade does. If it applies to what you want to do, then upgrade.

I switched over to CloneDVD2 and tried that utility instead of Nero and DVD Shrink. This works great. DVD Clone may not be quite as versatile, but it really works great.
There is definitely something to be said for simplicity, although I am sure some users would prefer to use a program that allows the user to have more control over compression ratios and such.
Thanks for your help everyone, but I took the easy way out this time.

It's good that you are back to backing up. A lot of people use CloneDVD2.
Nero is a good program and can do a lot of other things, so keep your eye open for another upgrade that will fix the current one.
