- Currently having a look at two DVDs ... the first being UT2004 and the second being a standard run of the mill DataDVD made using Nero with "plain" settings.
- Two drives in question, the first being a Pioneer 106 (firmware 1.07) and the second being a HL-DT-ST GDR8081N (translation: 16X LG DVDROM on my notebook... god i hate LG naming conventions)
- Both drives can read the DataDVD 100% of the time and the LG drive on my notebook can read the UT2004 disc every time.
- Currently running ASPI 4.60-1021 on both machines
- The Pioneer drive has in the past (i.e.,yesterday) read the UT2004 disc however every time, it takes some "coaxing" (i.e., reboot a bunch of times and eventually the disc is detected). However for any given time, drive will report being empty.
- The UT2004 disc is not noticeably scratched or otherwise artifaced in any way
Any thoughts or is this just a case of me hating DVD*.* and them hating me back? hehe This is a real pain in the arse having to image the DVD on the notebook and then FTPing across to the main system so I can install heehe

Is your Game UT2004 an original Disc or a copy of same?
Have you tried making a copy using a different media ?
The Pioneer DVD-106 is known to have a Low DVD/CD reading performance -- and Bad DAE performance with scratched media. Media quality is of prime importance.

Its a copy of the DVD (but i have the same problem with the originals -- its only DataDVDs that Ive burned can i get working).
The wierd thing is that UT2004 has worked on the Pioneer before -- usually I just have to reboot once or twice and it works fine .... its just today ive rebooted ~40 times to no avail.

Good call, updated.... and after 10 reboots i can get the disc detected ... and to get it detected after that seemingly requires a random number of reboots.

Would going into the drives properties, and checking "autoplay" make a difference?

Maybe time to replace the Pioneer, since it's the one giving you problems. How old is it?

God! Praetor's going to hate me for this. Your operating system/registry is probably corrupted. You tried a system restore and it didn't work didn't you? XP when corrupted is so unforgiving, and to try to fix it takes longer than to cleanly reinstall it.

Not a problem.... I do a complete reformat usually once or twice a week (and 35 times yesterday trying to get this other thingy working) .... the thing is ... it detectes every other disc perfectly fine... just not this specific disc -- and only sometimes at that -- like i mean, i reformated 2 days ago (3 days now), and I installed UT2004 fine but yesterday and today? Not a chance.... tomorow? Maybe. LOL

I do a lot of reformats too because I love tweaking shit and well that's it. My thought is that Praetor is too hardware savvy to let a Rom problem cause him that much stress. An operating system can get corrupted in a single moment when installing a new software. If you keep doing the same thing over and over again in the same way, you'll get the same result.

Interesting thing is that i can get these problems even when i try it off a fresh installation.... gremlins?

I've never ran into a problem that couldn't be fixed when all the parts are in good working order. If you have another drive laying around give it a try because if its not your drive and its not Windows then we come to your Motherboard. We know its not your CPU because its booting, and if your memory is OK and you've changed nothing in your CMOS, then we come back to your drive.
