Pre-mod ps2 with ps1 backups

I'm trying to get my ps1 backups to play on a PS2 console that I got pre-modded. I don't know the modchip it has, but I can tell you that it just boots normally for backup ps2 games, but in order to play original games, i have to eject, wait for the "browser" screen and then press & hold the eject button til the game starts to play.
I've tried using a backup ps1 cd and it just loads it as an audio cd. I've used it on a regular ps1 console and it runs, but the screen scrolls vertically, and it's in black&white (I've already found out from the forum that the latter is due to it being PAL and my system, NTSC.)
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
