I have been making back ups of all my movies and PS2 games for a while now.I can still burn games fine but all of a sudden I can't burn movies anymore.I get about half way through the read process and it freezes up or I get an error message.I have tried every option listed on this site.X Copy,DVD Decrypter,DVD Shrink.I have tried them all.I did a full restore today and I still can't burn Movies but backed up my sons Spiderman 2 game just fine. The weird thing is now I can't play a DVD at all on my PC.It freezes my computer.I can play the movies that I have already burned but the store bought ones will not play anymore.A friend of mine says it sounds like a memory issue. He says that he thinks that I don't have enough memory. But I have burned like 50 back ups with no problems until now.Maybe my memory is bad all of a sudden.I don't know, any help would be appreciated.

My recommendation is that you uninstall all of your software that pertains to DVD and or CD burning. Sometimes certain software borrows it's burning engine from another software. It may be that the burning engine that you are using is incompatible with your hardware. This happens to me when using Nero. After uninstalling Nero, voila!, everything works perfectly for me.
Try a very simple combination, my personal favorite is DVD Decryptor, and DVD Clone2.
DVD Decryptor is free, and DVD Clone 2 has a 30 day free trial.
What may work for some just simply may not work for others. Certain burning engines are incompatible with certain harware and firmware.
Let us know how it works out.

I have tried DVD Decrypter. It freezes at the same exact spot that all the other programs do.At about 50% through the read process.X Copy Express gives me an error message that it is unable to read the disk. With DVD Decrypter the read speed drops to 0 and starts counting read retries and never does anything else.DVD Shrink usually gives me the cycle redundancy check.I know the DVD isn't dirty or scratched because it came out of the shrink wrap from Wal-Mart to my burner.Today I tried the movie Dragonstorm which is only 4 gigs. But a normal size movie like 7 gigs stops at about 50%.Could I be running out of memory at this point?A friend of mine is using the same programs that I use but he has 1gig of memory where I only have 256 mb.He has no problems at all.

(1) I doubt that it's a memory problem -- I too have 256mb and I've never had a similar problem. Plus it seems odd that it would suddenly go bad. OTOH, do you do a lot of other tasks at the same time as ripping/encoding/burning? (2) Can't quite tell from what you wrote if you WERE able to back up Dragonstorm or not? Details on that please. (3) Are you sure you have enough hard drive space? If you've backed up a lot of DVDs and games which it sounds like you have, even if you've deleted the files they may still be there without you realizing it. This happened to me -- hard drive space kept going down, down, down even though I'd deleted all the DVD files after burning. I found out they weren't really gone. Now I use Norton Clean Sweep after deleting and it gets rid of them for good. You can do the same thing with Disk Clean-up -- go to programs / accessories / system tools / Disk Clean-up. At least you can find out if this is contributing to the problem.

Other than these suggestions, I'm stumped.

Karen H.--Dell Optiplex GX240, P4 1.50ghz, 256mb RAM (yeah, I need more), Windows XP Pro w/SP1, 80gb c: drive (replaced the 20gb c: that crashed), 126gb i: drive, 124gb j: drive, 500gb external hard drive partitioned into k: and l: drives, Sony DDU1621/C1 DVD-ROM to rip/encode, Sony DRX-530UL to burn, new Sony DRX-840U to burn DL discs ... need a new computer to go with it!!

I just did a full restore and I have about 30 gigs free on my hard drive.Dragonstorm backed up fine. It's the bigger movies that I have trouble with. When I push control, alt, delete it says that I am using 170 mb of my memory for some reason.I'm stumped as well.

When you ctrl alt del what other tasks does it show running? Try running msconfig and go to start up. Find out how many processes are running hidden. Eliminate those you don't need. Disable your antiviral software and screen saver. Make sure no hybernation issues are calling for action at about the time your error occurs. these thoughts may help sort out the bug.

If you can't play commercial disks, then the culprit may be your DVD reader. If DVDDecrypter slows down and stops it's usually a problems with disc, but it could also be the reader, and not your PC or its configuration. It seems like your reader doesn't want to make the layer jump.... If you had your reader for some time, maybe it's time for an upgrade!
