I just trade in my PS2 for a version 10, from a version 4. I have swap magic + slide card and I have been using the older sony dvd-r (2x) media for backed up games. When I bought the cheap princo (compusa) dvd-r (2x) it seemed to boot well, but soon after I got serious disc read errors with everything....sent it to sony... then it didn't play backups anymore.....etc. So i think the princo with the light dye caused the DRE's. I bought some ritek (ridata) dvd-r's with the G04 dye. They were supposed to be 1-4x, but it only let me burn 2x the lowest same as all the other media I've used. I heard they are one of the best dvd's for ps2 in terms of reading and not weakening the laser as much. But some games on them won't even boot and are very glitchy. I tested it out and they actually take a good 30-60 seconds or so more to boot(if it even boots) than sony dvd-r, and are a bit slower reading. Should I still use the older sony dvd's as well as the ridata one's. Or is the sony weakening my laser more even though is seems to boot fast w/o skips or anything?? Any advise, comments, suggestions???

That's strange for the Ritek DVDs not to work. I've had some trouble with the same Ritek brand discs you are using, but it's usually attributed to the type of games that are backed up. For games around 3g or above I use Fujifilm and for games less than than 3g, I use the Ritek brand. Perhaps you can try that method since I'm using a v9 PS2. Beware however, I've had my PS2 for about 6 months and the laser started to give out last week after only 2 months of swapping. I was lucky to get a replacement PS2 yesterday, but I'm waiting to see how long the new PS2 will last... This technology is tricky - best to try different media to suit your needs. I would say sony media is good, but then if it's not working for you then you should try something different.
