When the disc is being read I begin to get errors at 79%. If I ignore these errors is it common for it to take a long time, and most importantly will the backup work?

errors usually only appear when reading if the disc is unreadable(scratched etc...)... have you got any disc cleaner or a shop nearby that does disc cleaning(alot of dvd rental places do it now)..

Yeah, try cleaning it. If that doesn't work, you are going to need to get ahold of a different copy.
