Well as sad as it seems I think my dvd-105 pioneer drive is taking a turn for the worse. Oh well, 350-400 burns out of it anyhow.

I'm gonna need a new drive, and cost is a big issue.I buy ritek g04 disks so all the drive has to be able to do is 4x dvd-r burning and im happy. dvd+r is not important, I've never burnt them and dont feel the need to. Would someone be kind enough to give me some suggestions on a cost effective drive that will hopefully be problem free and allow me to burn 4x on dvd-r's :).

Not knowing what your budget is, I'd say the best performance for the lowest price goes to the Lite On 812S at $69 and the all around best deal is the Pioneer A07/107D at $83. Prices are from http://www.newegg.com/ .

That's my .02 :)

I just bought 2 Pioneer A07's (upgraded from A05, like you).

I don't go for +R or 8X media (although I did buy some 8X RiDiscs just to see how good they were) and I can really recommend the A07 as a great drive.

I can't say if the LiteOn is better/worse because I've never used one.

TDK 440N 4x +R -R Combo internal $59 after rebate (79-20) at Fry's Electronics ad for 07/14/04.
After firmware upgrade, burns RiData G04 4x DVD-R flawlessly. Not one coaster for me and I paid ninety dollars more for this burner Nov. 2003. Black faceplate.

newegg has the nec 2500a for $66 with free shipping. Not a bad deal on a good drive.

Government big enough to supply everything you need is powerful enough to take everything you have.
