Hey everyone,

I was wondering if I got an Athlon-64 3000+ processor without the 939-pin "feature" or whatever it is, will it be a waste to get the [939-pin] Asus A8V-Deluxe w/LAN, 7.1 Sound, IEEE-1394, USB 2.0 8x AGP Motherboard, because I won't be able to take advantage of the 939-pin stuff?

haha, sorry that I'm such a noob. I really have NO idea what 939-pin is, so if anyone could fill me in, that'd be great. Problem is, the Athlon-64 3500+ with the 939-pin is a whole $350 more..I don't think my budget can handle that. I'm already surpassing it with my 1 gig of memory >_<

Thanks for any and all help :D

EDIT: I'm also wondering what kind of heatsink I should get, and if I'll be needing any new fans. I'm hoping to overclock my computer to a fast yet stable enough speed. I'm gonna get the 3000+ processor, 1 GB Corsair XMS memory, and the A8V mobo (the one above) with 7200 RPM HDDs..any tips? Lights and other colorful things would be a plus :D

BTW, about how fast will I be able to overclock my system to?

Well if you're gonna get a 939 CPU -- get a 939 mobo. Depending on what 939chip you get, Socket940 may not even be an option.

It's the new spec for non-server boards. Opterons use Socket940

1. The Socket754 and Socket940 non-Opterons are being "weeded out"
2. The Socket939 chips dont have to use "registered memory" which is slower than nonregistered memory

Have a look at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/81431 for some ideas :)

You may want HDD enclosures or HDD coolers

Yes they are but dont make them a priority -- get a good fan first ... you can always get lit fanguards

Nobody can tell you. It's a trial and error sport.

Damn, all this technical socket stuff got me confused >_<

I feel like such an idiot :D

So, what do you recommend me to get? I really hope to stay under $1000 on this system...HDD price isn't included in that, and graphics card/speakers/monitor/os/mouse/keyboard also will not be bought with the system.

If I go for the Socket939 processor, will my system still be any good? Or should I dish out the extra money for the 939-pin? I'm getting a mobo that supports that anyways...

$1000 for a system without HDD and vid card, you should be glad to visit http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/93097 where I've spec'd out a nice Socket939 system with extras for just over $1100 ... cut out the vidcard and hdd and you're loaded! :)

I'd go for Socket939 because unless you want to Opteron (Socket940) then the rest are being phased out
