Hi, I was wondering what everyone's opinions here are about external mod chips. I was thinking about getting one. I would get an internal chip, but the place I used to go to got closed down and I heard a lot of things about installing a mod chip yourself. If anyone can tell me about a good place to buy ps2 chips internal and external in los angeles I'd be very thankful. I dont have a credit card so I cant buy on most or all websites. Thanks for the help.
edit: would a slide card and swap magic disc be better than a neokey usb external mod chip?

slide card would be better, but fliptop would be the best.

im new to all of this stuff, so how would a fliptop work exactly?...do I need anything else besides a fliptop to play games? I have gameshark v2, but I dont know how to use it to play games. I want to play backed up games of cd-r and dvd-r and also import games.

I also want to be able to play online with the network adapter...I heard that getting chips dont allow that. Will a fliptop or smd or external/internal mod chips effect playing online? thanks

Get a flip top and swap magic discs. Swap magic are boot discs, you load them, then open the fliptop to swap for you backup. you cant hit eject and put in a backup because then the ps2 will know you did it. Also, a fliptop doesn't affect playing online.

so, if I back up games I will be able to play online? I heard the flip top is kinda hard to install, you need extra srews, which I dont have, and also the ribbon for the cd try gets caught sometimes? Is that true?
I dont have a credit card, so where can I buy the fliptop and smd?

I went to this store in my neighborhood, and asked if they modded ps2. My friend got his psx modded there a couple years ago. But when I asked them about it, they acted like they knew nothing about it. So, there are no stores in my area that sell and install modchips, fliptops, or smd. They just sell import games... =[

im not sure where you can get one without a credit card, but someone's got to take checks. But, a fliptop is easy to install and no extra screws are needed. If you visit http://www.ps2nfo.com you can get the programs and directions on playing backup games online.

There's a smd disc for cd-r and a smd for dvd-r. Usually when you buy it from some place, they come as a combined package. Breaker Pro is for playing PS1 backups (smd will not do it) and also smd doesn't play cd-r dvd rips above 630 MB, but with Breaker Pro it acts as a TOC where you can play all/most cd-r dvd rip games.
Hope that helps

so heres my plans, from what you guys have helped me with...:
Fliptop
SMD (newest versions)
Breaker Pro (if its not too much)
what is the difference in the fliptop versions? I saw somewhere in ad's that theres a version 1 and 2, any difference?
If it helps, I have a ps2 version 2, also a gameshark v2 (is there any way that I can use gs2 as an advantage for me? I read on some other post that gs2 works as a boot disc, I think?) Thanks again for all the help.

since you have a v2, you have 10 screws holding the top on (id check to make sure). so you need the fliptop designed for v1-v3 ps2 consoles.

I dont see screws, just 10 black squares, which im guessing are screws underneath. Should I buy it online? Does anyone know of any stores in los angeles that sells fliptops, smd, and breaker pro?
also, I saw in your sig, it says dvdloader. Is that for playing dvd-r games on ps2?
edit: should I get the cdloader too?

dvd loader is just cd loader edited to be burnt to dvd (us people with newer ps2's have trouble loading cds). but yes you should get it (http://www.swapmagicfix.com). And no, you cant buy any of those in a store, you need to buy them online.

do you reccomend any sites that are the most reliable, and not expensive? also, I dont have a credit card, so this might be a problem.
so this is my new to get list:
fliptop
smd
buster pro
dvdloader (download)
cdloader (download?)
Is this going to be under $100 USD? Thanks for all the help
edit: is there anything else I should add to my list?

breaker pro is only needed if you want to play dvd games that are ripped to fit on cd. For a fliptop and swap magic discs, it will be $40-45. You should start a new thread and see if anyone knows a site that takes checks or money orders.
