- The Athlon64 doesnt have HT.
- There isnt really such thing as "best performance" ... if you're looking for a specific task then one may do a better job than another ... othwrwise both should be sufficient for avg Joe type of task :)
In my opinion the athlon64 3000 is the best for gaming, but it also depends on what gfx card you have in the pc. If you have a radeon 9200 in the athlon64 and a radeon 9800 in the p4 the p4 would be better for games as it has a way better gfx card. If they were both radeon 9800 then i would say the athlon64.

The problem is, a lot of software is optimized for Intel. The true performance of the CPUs is therefore clouded by Intel brainwashing/browbeating of programmers. Intel provides the best/latest assemblers and pushes the latest Intel optimizations ie. hyperthreading, SSE3 etc.
In some ways, the 'mainstream' is still heavily Intel.
I take great delight in the fact that World Champion Scuderia Ferrari uses 100% AMD only, in everything they do!
There's hope... ;-)
