I'm in the market for one of these monsters and was wondering if anyone could share any pearls of wisdom regarding these TV's. Whats the best make to go for ? Are they troublesome ? Where's the best place to buy from ? .... That kind of thing.

Is there a picture quality issue with these types of sets ?

Thanks.

I finally decided on the Hitachi 50V500 50" LCD Projection TV. After reviewing so many and taking a look at the very many features of various big screen TVs, I decided on the Hitachi 50V500 due to its quality, picture, reviews, features, and price.

I did not compare the standard CRT RP TVs because they are going to be going out like the Dinosaur and so I narrowed the field to the Sony 50" LCD, Samsung 51" DLP, Panasonic 50" LCD and the RCA 50" DLP. Now first with the DLP TVs. RCA was okay but I heard too many complaints of it being not reliable that I quickly scratched it off my list.

As for the Samsung, really good colors but they can be too extreme at times. Because DLP technology uses little independent spinning wheels, it got a little dizzing watching TV. Plus the rainbow effect is noticeable to me while not to others. Price was usually a few hundred dollars more compared to the LCDs so I decided not to choose the Samsung.

The Panasonic LCD picture just wasn't a sharp as I would like compared to the other TVs. It was okay but both Sony and Hitachi were better.

That narrowed down my choice between the Hitachi and Sony. Both had good pictures but Hitachi was better in Standard Definition. Since almost 95% of the channels are in SD, it probaly is better to choose the TV that had a better SD signal then HD since the HD signals are close. However, even the HD picture seemed a little more crisp with the Hitachi compared to the Sony. The other problem with the Sony was that they had bad lamp problems earlier this year. These problems have been supposedly fixed but it did not make me feel better.

Also, the Hitachi had some great extra features like a day mode and night mode that changes the picture quality depending on the time of day to get the best out of it. It also features a little slot in the front to show digital pictures if you have a digital camera. The various 4:3 and 16:9 aspect rations are also cool and seem to give more options then the other TVs.

Also, the Hitachi uses all of its own parts and Hitachi has been well established in the RPTV industry to know what they are doing. Sony is best in CRT TVs but Hitachi is better in RPTVs.

The only reason why Hitachi is not as well known as the other brands above is because it does not market itself as much as them. That is why you can only find Hitachi's in only a few handful of stores like Circuit City and Sears. You won't find them at the Good Guys, Best Buy, or Fry's.

I bought mine at Circuit City. They originally priced it at $3200 but they had a special last month that lowered it to $2700 and plus I had a coupon that lowered it down to $2400. At that price, I could not pass on the TV.

I hope this helps.

darier, I have been a big fan of Mitsibishi video for about 15 years now. I still have my first 27" I bought in 1989 and it still plays perfect.

Over the years I have upgraded sticking with Mitsibishi and ALL still work. The quality is unparalled or at least as good as the best I've ever seen.

I don't know what you want to spend, but the down side is they "ain't" cheap. I currently have the 2nd largest digital HDTV they make, i believe at 56" or 57" for 4500.00 , (can't remember exactly lol), they do have another at 65" for 6500.00.

Man this thing has got it all, pips in about 10 different modes, 4 composite inputs(3 for video alone and 2 for audio), 3 s-video inputs(1 for video using s plug and 2 for audio), 3 normal inputs( one normal jack for video and 2 for audio) and one quick hook up on the front for video cams, digital cameras, games, etc. This makes it handy for computer links(monlink), dvd players, surround sound stereo, playstations, you know, all the stuff that goes with home theater.

It has 3 more cable inputs + a DTV input for cable HD boxes, which makes it nice for all those pips(split screen 3 screen 6 screen 9 screen etc.) Another good feature, it has 7 viewing screens from full to widescreen, expand, letterbox, etc, to fit what you're watching so figures don't appear thin or fat because your source does not match your TV screen.

I don't know how big you wanna go but they have smaller affordable sets for around 500.00 starting at 27" . Do you want HD?, The thing is, they last forever. Mitsibishi makes their own stuff and has their own parts. I have NEVER seen a more dependable TV. Besides the 3 I own, my father, sister, 2 brothers, all have Mitsibishi TV's and they all still work. None to my knowledge have ever been worked on or fixed.

Again, Quality is excellent, pic is extremely sharp!almost as tho someone took a black ink pen and drew around the outlines of people in the screen. Also unlike many projections, you can watch it from the side with no change in your viewing. This is because it is a picture tube digital projection TV. Picture can be adjusted auto depending on rooms lighting conditions.

Whatever you decide on do not buy one of the old time rear projection televisions. You are better off to get a smaller screen with the new technology than a 60" TV that will be obsolete in a few short years. You know the kind,(RCA, Zenith, etc.), you can find deals on these for 1,000.00 to 1,500.00 for a 50" to 60" screen.

There are sales, I got mine on a special for 3,000.00, they put the ad in the paper on Sunday and were sold out on Monday! lol They don't advertise and they aren't everywhere. Circuit City doesn't have them anymore because they put them on sale without Mitsibishi's consent and their contract was revoked.

Believe it or not, I got mine at Sears. In latter years Sears has started to emerge as a pretty good retailer for quality electronics.

Anyhow, hope this helps and good luck however you decide.

GO VOLS !
