Every time I try to burn an image, be it a cd or dvd i get the error Tracking servo failure. I am using alcohol 120% Now I know my burner is ok, I tried 3 different burners, two LG 4081B's, and a sony DRU-500AX. Also cant burn with any other burning progs, sonic recordnow, blindwrite, roxio, and many others... I tried diff kinds of cd-r and dvd media. Imation, ritek ect.. This happened before so I ended up formatting my pc and then it could burn again. I close all running programs, ect. I have a P4 3.2GHZ, 1 gig of ram, XP Pro, Abit MAX3 mobo... Can anyone think of anything to try?
Thanks

Other devices may be interfering with the CD-R/RW drive. Disconnect all other removable devices, then try recording again. If there is still a problem, try the following.
a. Optimal Hardware Configuration
All hard drives are placed on the Primary IDE, check that the drives are correctly set as master/slave. CD-ROM/CD-R/RW drives are placed on the Secondary IDE, set the recording drive as the "master". If you are using a USB or IEEE devices, disconnect them.
b. Update your chipset
You have windows XP :-
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller, and a brand name controller, e.g. Intel, SIS, VIA, etc. The brand name controller is what needs to be updated. Please visit their website to obtain these updates.
c. Configure Windows
Make sure that your operating system has been fully updated. Visit the Microsoft website to acquire these updates.

Thanks for the reply. I have already tried all these things though. When I look at the CD-ROMs in the device manager, it shows my LG GSA-4081B, but then it also shows "AXV CD/DVDROM SCSI cdrom device" I'm not sure how this is getting installed, I have seen it before on my pc. I only have the one drive in my computer. I have no SCSI devices installed. I can't think of any programs that may be installing it. I'm not even sure if this is the cause of the problem.

In Device Manager -- that ""AXV CD/DVDROM SCSI cdrom device "" is the VIRTUAL Drive installed by Alcohol 120% -- you have that program on your PC !

Sounds like a DMA problem or ASPI problem.
I would check the properties on the IDE controller on both channels and see if either has a drive in PIO mode. This can cause speed and error out problems.
You can also just switch the controller cables on the mother board. On boot up the DMA mode should reset on the channels.
If you still have a problem then try Force ASPI.

My primary IDE channel 0 is using UDMA mode 5. This is what the burner is hooked up to. My secondary IDE channel 0 says its using UDMA mode 2. My HDD is SATA. I installed ForceASPI 1.7, still get the same error. Again I can burn DVD images ok, just not cd-r. It does this about 5 seconds after i hit burn. Heres from the log:

Yes it does say Mode 5. And I actually didnt install roxio this time. This happened before, but since I formatted roxio hasent been installed. I'm not using DVDRAM, i'm using imation and memorex cd-r's trying to burn a cd-r. The drive is called DVDRAM. Also i't hyperthreading, not two CPU's.

track servo error
(track servo error)
This error message appears for the same reason as it appears in Track following error is present.
=======================
Track following error
(track following error)
This error message appears for one of the following reasons:
The CD Writer has problems writing on the CD-R/RW. Please resort to another brand mark of CD-R/RW. Please ask the vendor of your CD burner for recommended brands of CD-R/RW. You will also find information in problematic CD-R/RW.
The power supply of your computer is not providing enough power.
You are using an external device. Please check the power supply and for test purposes install the burner in the computer.
Numerous graphics cards require a lot of power. The same goes for numerous CPUs and some harddisks.
the mains cable or the plug is defective. Please use another plug cable for test purposes.
The computer vibrates to such an extent that the laser can not stay in the track. In particular if a CD-ROM drive is being used as the read drive.
The device has become hot
Only operate in cool conditions.
If you have one of the following CD Writer:
Grundig CDR100IPW, HP 4020, Kodak CDR240, Mitsubishi CDVR2X4, Mitsumi CD-R CR-2401TS, Philips CDD2000, Plasmon CDR4220, Plasmon RF4100, Plasmon RF4102, Wearnes CDR-432
or are using one of the following types of
HP 6020, Mitsubishi CDVR2X6, Mitsubishi CDVR, Philips CDD2600, Wearnes CDR-632P
, then it yould be a case of the well-known grease problem. In particular if the error has only been occurring recently. Other CD Writerare also affected, in which it may help to grease the axles with silicon grease (Warning: We don't guarantee anything!) Further information on this:
If your CD burner is in the first group:
http://village.flashnet.it/~fn023975/cdd2000.html (Information on how to fix the Philips CDD2000 'Spring problem')
Users report that firmware 1.25 reduces the problem.
If your CD burner is in the second group:
German: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/6893/fixg.htm
English: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/6893/fix.htm
The lens of the write laser is dirty.
the blank itself is not clean or is of bad quality. In particular if writing with 8x, conditions like this become noticeable.
If 80 minute blanks are being used, then the cause can be that the track distance is too small, on the limit of the specification. It is possible that you are using a CD Writer , which has problems writing on these.
Older driver versions of the file CDR4VSD.VXD (driver from Easy CD) also cause the above mentioned error message
The error message can also occur if the CD Writer has not been set up correctly.
Please set the system settings as described in recommended settings .
One case is known in which the error message appeared after exchanging the mother board. After newly setting up the motherboard (including formatting), the problem was solved.
Or there is a hardware problem.
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I tried 2 different burners... A sony and an LG. They both give the same error. This would also not explain why if I format, then I can burn again. It must be software related somehow....

Did you switch the cables on the IDE controller?
Did you check the UDMA level in the hardware manager?
You can use DVDdecrypter to try and burn something at 4x on a dvd. The device buffer will bounce left to right if the burner is starving for bandwitdh.
Have you flashed the DVD drive with any firmware.

I created a new user account in XP, and now it burns OK in that user account with alcohol. Yes all jumpers and hardware is correct, BIOS is correct. I'm just gonna settle for burning in a new account for now... Thanks for your help. It is appreciated.
