dvd drive won't recognize dvds

i have a nec nd 1300a which was working perfectly until i turned my pc on last night and now it won't recognize any dvd that i put in it. it will however recognize cds.
when i start up my pc i get an error saying that a device or driver failed to start. when i check event viewer to find out which one it says "DVDVRRdr failed to load". i'v tried to uninstall then reinstall the device but that doesn't work. can somebody help me? what should i do next?
