I am a super newbie who tried to burn a movie using Shrink with no success after reading hundreds of posts and all the newbie tips. I think, at least, one of my issues is DMA. Please forgive any misuse of language, etc. I am very new to all the lingo. I am able to go to the Primary Ide Channel and change the Transfer mode to DMA on Device 1. However, the Current Transfer Mode still says PIO mode. How do I change this. I am totally frustrated and would appreciate any help.

Welcome to AD :)

It often helps to uninstall the drive through the Device Manger and then reboot to allow windows to detect and install the drive.

Just go to Device Manager, find the drive in question then double-click it. In the Properties window click the Driver tab, select Unistall then click OK. Now reboot and check if the DMA status has changed.

If this doesn't do the trick, it can sometimes work by uninstalling the whole IDE channel (either Primary or Secondary depending on which one the drive is on).

Ask away if you need more help :)

First off what config do you have as far as Hard Disks and CD/DVD/ROMS/BURNERS etc. How many do you have and how are they connected?

Make sure you have the IDE controller set to UDMA in BIOS Otherwise the Driver in Windows will not enable it. Normally this is done by making sure all the IDE settings are on AUTO in BIOS - also enable Busmastering, again this is in the BIOS.

Also if you can me what Motherboard you have, that will help.

I don't know what I am doing.

Thanks for all your help. I uninstalled and re-installed and the Transfer Mode changed to Ultra DMA 5 for Device 0 and Ultra DMA Mode 2 for Device 1. Under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers there is Intel(r) 82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller then Primary IDE Channel then Secondary IDE Channel. I have an 80 gig Hard drive with a DVD-Rom and an external DVD+/-Burner. I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 Laptop, P3, 1.2 GHz. I believe my DVD rom/CD burner is a TDK. If anyone can give me any more pointers I would truly appreciate it.

That's a common issue - mine used to do it a lot untill I changed my Memorex CD burner for a Pioneer107 - could be coincidence.

Used to have to uninstall and reinstall the IDE driver about once every two weeks as the Memorex kept dropping to PIO mode.

Dell Inspirion - I assume that is a pre-built unit then? If you have had it a while see if the latest Intel chipset drivers are newer that the ones they installed.

I don't know what I am doing.

I am still having issues. I set DMA and it seems to have stayed at UltraDMA. I launch Shrink and the program seems to work. I get absolutely no error messages. However, when I try to play the dvd in my computer or in a stand alone player, both will not play. The disc just keeps spinning until it finally just stops. I did try to log on windows xp (home edition) as another user and that did not work for me either. Does anyone have any more suggestions. One thing, how do I check BIO's?

Well, DMA is already set. I check it to be sure. Then I follow the AD guide for Shrink. I put my target disk in the dvd-rom. Launch Shrink, click open disk, press ok since it locates my dvd-rom. The analysis of my dvds (now I have only tried 2) show the movie takes up less than 4,800 mb. The entire bar is green. I de-click any language other than English, in the main movie. I usually leave the rest of the movie alone, since I really don't know what I should remove and what I should't. Usually that only changes the compression percentage to about 55% or so. I click backup. The dialogue box opens and I check the Target Device to be my Lite on dvdrw sohw-812s. I have been reading in some forums that this burner may be my problem? I make sure that the Burn at least 30mm is ticked and then click ok. The dvd begins encoding and I have already set it to immediately burn the movie, which may be my problem. Should I make a folder or an image and then burn later? Everything seems to work. I have never received any error messages. When I try to view the dvd, it does not play. It spins then stops. The first dvd I tried to burn did show a brief picture, about 5 seconds, then stopped and produced a disk error message on my stand alone dvd player. One thing that I know is a no-no but I haven't ordered better media yet is my dvds. They are TDK's 4x dvd-rw's. Could this be my problem? Any help or suggestions is much appreciated.

I can play the original movie in my computer using power dvd but not the burned movie. I am using dvd+rw's. I do have some Sony dvd+r's. I can try those and see what happens or should i just wait for better media?
