I'm sorry if this seems lame but here goes....
I just set-up the Sony drive with Nero in a Dell 4600C.

The following things are troubling me-

Before receiving the burner, I started to download Nero (intending to buy it later) and it left icon "StartSmart" on my desktop. Since the burner came with Nero, I loaded it again from the supplied CD but didn't remove the previous downloaded material (thought it would update/overwrite).

The question- After the download, there were alot of updates available from the Nero website. I was thinking this was because the "old version" needed updating but I couldn't tell the old download from the new since it put icons in the same places. This is probably a non-issue-just checking. I updated the software (6 recommended downloads) just in case.

Big issue- How to explain ? According to a document "10 DVD Newbie Tips", If you've never played a Dvd in your new burner, then the region is not set.
Following the document, I went to my computer, hardware devices, located the Sony burner and tried to change the region- it said to insert region disc/are you an administrator.

I put a region 1 disc in the Sony drive, and promptly Dell Media Experience loads and asks me if I want to change the region- I said yes and sure enough the region is now changed.

I'm trying to anticipate future conflicts- Dell Media experience seems to be running the show for now. Do I want this ?
I plan on using Nero/DVD Decrypter with the Sony drive to back-up DVD's.

Any advice appreciated

Richard

Just one small piece of advice on the Nero 6 updates, make sure you did not install the package that includes the InCD program, its packet writing software that conflicts badly with DVD ripping/burning softwares.I know its related directly to your post on Dell but it could save you problems in the future. There is an excellent post by brobear on programme conflicts.

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, I dealt with that issue last night. Actually, I tried unsuccessfully to download InCd. I got the message that "Veritas-Drive Letter Access" has been detected and to please remove it. Ha-as it turns out, Sonic Record Now which comes with the Dell uses this packet writing software. I hope things become less complicated hence forth, I've yet to burn a single DVD.
