I have a v7 PS2 with a PnP Key No Solder ModChip and Swap Magic. I'm getting mostly bad burns of CDs and DVDs whether I'm making a copy or burning from a file. I've used Nero, CDRWin, and DVD Decrypter. Something like 80% are bad... either don't load or freeze when playing, but a random few (like FFX, Prince of Persia, Contra, Kingdom Hearts, and Max Payne 2) work perfect.
I've switched from generic media to Verbatim DataLife DVD+R's but it hasn't helped much. I've tried burning at the slowest rate possible but it's not helping. I've triple checked the Mod... all seems fine. I'm out of ideas and losing money on good media. Any ideas?

I forgot to mention my DVD writer is a Emprex 8x, and i'm reading from a 16x DVD Reader... but like I said, I'm reading and writing at the lowest speeds.

some of those so called bad burns might need cd loader. http://www.swapmagicfix.com

If your burner is capable of writing to DVD+R and DVD-R, you might try burning a couple of games on DVD-R. I think that some of the older PS2's were not good at reading DVD+R.

Version 7 might be new enought that it's not a problem, but you never know. I would give that a try first. You can also make sure that your burner has the most current firmware (check the manufacturer's website) but if you're not having trouble with other things you burn with it, then the burner itself might not be the problem.

i have a v7 ps2 and i use +r media. Ps2 reads and plays fine! Try copying a dvd in +r media. If it loads your ps2 reald +r media. I would advise getting ritek go4 disks. I use them and i have not had 1 coaster yet! And not many people say this but rip it at the highest speed. I ripped driver 3 at 1x and it froze then i tried it again at 4x and it was fine!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Some of the games that work are on DVD-R and some are DVD+R, so I don't think that it's the problem in general. Looking at the the swapmagicfix list... the only 2 games on the list i've tried to burn (FFX and Kingdom Hearts) are both among the few that work. I haven't tried cleaning it yet... but wouldn't a dirty lens work sporadically instead of always working with the same discs?

I guess the next step is to try ritek go4 discs.

You know... I've got a v9 PS2 and I've had similar problems as yours with the skipping and no loading. I tried the usual "tricks": burning at 1x, using Ritek G04, using DVD-R discs. Through trial and error, I've managed to get no coasters (after 30+ backups) by using Fujifilm DVD+R and burning at 2x and 4x speeds. Hope this helps and good luck.

I'm starting to think that it's the actual PS2 that has the problem. FFX (burned from a straight copy) has always loaded perfect, but now it freezes on the swap magic screen, just like a lot of the burns. Any ideas on this?

If you have a fliptop, open the cover and clean your laser with a cotton bud and some pure alcohol (even though spit will probably work too) make sure you dont put too much pressure on the laser as you may damage it.

speaking of flip tops, you might also need to adjust your laser for reading. This can be done by ejecting the tray, opening the flip top and adjusting the white cog in the very back of the now empty tray (now that the tray is out). I had problems reading CD-R's and after I tried this it got everything to work. The damn thing just gets loose some time.

thanks cvisionz... i'll try that next.

Well I cleaned the laser and it fixed the problem with FFX, but still the same problems with the rest.

Man I can't catch a break... I started farting around with the white cog cvisionz was talking about, I reassembled the ps2 and now i'm getting disc read errors. Guess I'll have to mess with the voltage to fix it.

Yah... it takes about an hour to monkey with that white cog.

Try this: Spin the Cog all the way around until the laser head is completly down. Put in the Swap Magic CD or Swap Magic DVD (it needs to be an original non burnt disc to get this to work).

If (well, when really cause you need to do this about 30 times before it is set *just right*) you get a disc read error: hit the eject button to open the tray, open your flip top, and move the cog 2 CLICKS *only* in a direction to make the laser sit slightly higher.

Repeat this again and again until the laser reads the discs first time every time.

even if it doesn't say on swapmagicfix.com to use cd loader, dvd loader, etc., still try to use it. You never know, it might work!!
