I've tried to back up athens 2004 today with dvd decrpter and nero6. It gets to about 66% through reading and then erports errors saying it cannot complete the read. The game plays fine on my ps2 but when i've looked closly at the disc it has a few bad scratches on one side, could this be the problem and if so if there a solution, please.

yes the scratches could be the problem
try cleaning the disc with a cd cleaner
