Hi, hopefuly this isn't elsewhere, i have a 'stock' computer (Time powerstation - i know many of you shuddder to think i have one) with an athlon 3000xp+ that in my opinion is running much too hot. The problem is excessivley exacerbated during summer months (gets much worse ;-)). I have been using Hmonitor, though i don't know how acurate it is. My results are below:

Winter months

CPU: 61.5C (no load) 68.5C (game)
Motherboard: 34C (no load) 42C (game)

Summer months

CPU: 67.5C (no load) 76.5C (game)
Motherboard: 42C (no load) 53C (game)

In winter, it doesnt seem to be a problem, but in summer during games (even small ones) the temperature just rockets up. Any ideas on whats best to cool this machine?

I just installed a Thermaltake 735 POLO HSF in my system and the thing is amazing. It's very well made and my temps never exceed 45ºC under full load. The thing is fairly loud when running full bore but the kit includes two different variable speed controllers - one for an empty PCI cover and one for an empty 3.5" bay - that allow you to run it at low speed and relative silence while sufring the net, etc. and crank it up when gaming and so forth. I bought mine for around $30 US.

I've recently de-dusted the case and removed a few degrees from those figures but it is still quite warm. Trouble is, there isn't any cooling solution that doesn't require a hole in my case (i dont have a spare fan grille or CD-ROM style or for that matter floppy style opening on my case.

A chassis fan prolly will help but not that much here.... i used to have the same problem with my Volcano7+ (summers just get too hot here :P) If you're concerned about noise, the Silentboost K7 is very effective and quiet although if you're interested in brute force cooling, the Volcano12 will do the job admirably (virtually same dealy as the Polo735)

So where are you suggesting i put that fan then?

In my opinion summers are too cold in the UK, particularly this one.
