I would like to make a backup of a rental dvd, the dvd has 2 title sets. The main movie files will fit onto a DVD5 if I can remove the second title set which is only trailers for upcoming films.

When the DVD first plays, it comes up with the usual copyright warning message and then plays a studio movie logo. It immediately plays the trailers (roughly 15mins) and then the main movie menu is displayed.

I can remove the copyright warning message easily however, I have no idea how to change the VIDEO_TS.IFO files to ignore VTS_2.

Here is the VIDEO_TS.IFO file.

VMG Overview:

Am I missing something here?

Option 1 Just rip the movie VOBs and not the rest
Option 2 Rip the whole lot and strip out everything except the movie using IFOedit

Would this allow me to keep the menu as I would ideally like to leave it in.

I am a completely newbie so I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid question!

You can keep the menu but there is little point as half the contents of the menu won't point anywhere any more as you will have stripped them out. The chapters will still be there and you can skip through them, the movie starts as soon as you put the disc in the player.

I never keep the menu unless I am doing a direct 1 to 1 copy of a less than 4.3Gb disc, so I can't tell you how to do it, but i think there is guide on here somewhere

How can I leave the menu out out my burning? What remaining files must I keep so the DVD can be played on a standalone?
Thanks.

Leaving the menu out seems to come naturally to me lol I can't get it to stay.

http://www.doom9.org

Go here and read the guide of keeping just the main movie.

You need the VOBs from the title set that has the main movie in it if it isn't 01 then if you rip just the movie with DVD decrypter it will kindly rename them all.
You need
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO

and all the VOBs that go with that set.

VIDEO_TS.VOB is the menu I think, but it won't get ripped if you rip just the main movie

http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/derrow/menuidiot.html
is a guide to keeping the menu

as is
http://www.hkruse.dircon.co.uk/

so if you read them you'll know how not to by default.

If you end up with just the VOB files and no ifo's or Bups have IFOedit create them for you from the VOB's
